    Problems noticed[edit]

    This section collects cases where running the tool led to incomplete or incorrect information on Wikidata. There may be many reasons for this:

    • the Source, M.D. tool itself;
    • the data model we are using;
    • some technical issues with Wikidata;
    • some issues at CrossRef (or possibly other DOI registries), PubMed, PubMed Central, or the original publisher;
    • any of the APIs involved.

    We have only begun to explore this in more detail, so the subsections below are currently sorted by symptoms rather than causes, and we work on disentangling the two.

    Handling of pages[edit]

    • page(s) (P304) should ideally not be used for electronic article IDs, for which we now have article ID (P2322). Many publishers do not make the distinction, though CrossRef does.
      • think about using start and end page
        • sometimes complicated in old print stuff, where an article may have multiple start and end (or missing) pages, e.g. due to advertisements
      • Revisit later

    Consortia (corporate authors)[edit]

    Should these be treated differently than human authors? How? They are sometimes being picked up properly (example: Author 1 in Identification and analysis of functional elements in 1% of the human genome by the ENCODE pilot project (Q21061203)) but usually not. Below is a list of QIDs for which the information was incomplete.

    Name suffixes[edit]

    Author and publisher names mixed[edit]

    • Who should be listed as the author of an interview?

    Undefined offset[edit]

    Occurred for CrossRef entries that do not have a paper title. Fixed now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 09:28, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

    Article title too long[edit]

    • Apparently, labels can have a maximum of 250 characters. The titles of some scholarly articles are longer than that, which causes an error in Quick statements:
    ERROR (set_label) : Must be no more than 250 characters long

    Examples include

    This is a limitation of Wikidata. --Magnus Manske (talk) 09:29, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

    No titles[edit]

    Title formatting[edit]

    Some article titles come with HTML, LaTeX or other formatting, which needs to be handled in a consistent fashion.

    • Italics in article titles sometimes cause whitespace to disappear from article title

    Subscripts/ superscripts[edit]

    ERROR (set_monolang) : Malformed input: Electronic structure of MoSe 2 , MoS 2 , and WSe 2 . II. The nature of the optical band gaps
    • Many titles have additional whitespace as received from CrossRef. For the same item as above, the full title received was
     Electronic structure of MoSe 2 , MoS 2 , and WSe 2 . II. The nature of the optical band gaps

    Other title issues[edit]

    Journal names[edit]

    • If there is no item for the journal, or no title (P1476) on it, then no published in (P1433) statement can be made on items about articles published in that journal. Many items about journals seem to still have the old P357 (P357) instead, or no item at all.

    • Sometimes, article metadata like journal or article titles or author names are inconsistently capitalized, e.g. in ALLCAPS or smallcaps
    • Some DOIs also contain capital letters, which may cause confusion

    Main subject[edit]

    • This is a very useful feature in principle, but it often links to false positives, e.g. things rather than topics.

    Fatal errors[edit]

    • "Fatal error: Cannot use object of type stdClass as array in /data/project/sourcemd/public_html/index.php on line 300"

    CrossRef Lookup has failed[edit]

    Non-CrossRef DOIs[edit]

    • When checking existing items, the tool sometimes comes up with incomplete suggestions, especially for missing authors, e.g. here.

    Examples to look at[edit]

    Existing items for which Source MD's suggested edits need tweaking[edit]

    This collection is not complete.

    Existing items for which Source MD suggests to create new ones[edit]

    For many of these, the suggested edits also need tweaking, as per the section above. This collection is not complete.

    Features missing[edit]

    • author (P50)
    • license (P275)
      • Where would that information be available in machine-readable form?
        • CrossRef will have it eventually for major publishers. Sadly, PLOS and BMC and many others still missing at the moment...
    • main subject (P921)
      • Trying to do that from DOI data; can not disambiguate multiple items with exact same label at the moment.
    • human-readable description
      • can we just take the abstract? Or copyright? Too long anyway? Use automatic description, once we have "main subject"?
        • Abstracts are
          1. free text, which does not really fit into Wikidata as it stands right now
          2. almost never CC0
    • article ID (P2322)
      • at CrossRef, this corresponds to "item_number" within "publisher_item"
