EMCO was formed to allow library workers to create entities outside of the LCNAF to better support discovery in linked data environments.. The Wikidata community is by far the largest EMCO community. The Early Adopters phase will be looking only at persons and corporate bodies. This phase is expected to last until autumn 2026.

This event series is an effort to introduce EMCO participants to Wikidata and to develop frameworks and skills for entity management in Wikidata.

Event Series Notes

Session 1 - Introduction to Wikidata (part of the LD4 Conference)

  • Primarily aimed at EMCO participants, this presentation will provide an introduction to Wikidata. EMCO, Entity Management Cooperative, is the new group from the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). Its goal is to engage with broader communities of metadata stakeholders than those who can participate in other PCC programs (NACO, SACO, etc.) and to create and maintain mappings between different metadata schema and ontologies in use by PCC members. The Early Adopters phase of EMCO is focused on persons and corporate bodies, so this presentation will demonstrate how to create a Wikidata account, how to search Wikidata, how to edit and create items for persons and corporate bodies, and how to provide references for statements. It will also allow participants to connect with the LD4 Wikidata Affinity group, which hosts and records regular sessions showcasing and providing assistance for Wikidata projects. The Affinity group plans to host several similar sessions over the next few months to help EMCO participants feel confident in their Wikidata work.
