The International Mother Language Day 2026 Datathon is a datathon organised around International Mother Language Day from February 21, 2026 to March 3, 2026. This datathon seeks to improve and expand Wikidata's coverage of languages and related topics.
Goals
[edit]- Create and improve items related to languages, dialects, writing systems, and linguistic communities.
- Enhance statements, references, labels, descriptions and aliases for language-related items.
- Bring together contributors from diverse language communities to strengthen multilingual representation and make knowledge accessible to everyone.
- Strengthen connections between Wikidata and Wikimedia projects around language and education topics.
Who can join..
[edit]- Everyone is welcome to join and contribute regardless of prior Wikidata experience.
- Young people interested in language, education, or technology.
- Teachers, students, researchers, and librarians.
- Wikimedians, open data contributors, and open-source developers.
How to participate

- Create or log in to your Wikidata account.
- Take a Wikidata Tour in your preferred language to get familiar with editing. :)
- Review the suggested tasks listed below.
- Make improvements during the datathon period (February 21, 2026 – March 3, 2026).
- Click the Register for event button at the top of this page to sign up.

- 🌱 New to Wikidata? Try a Wikidata Tour. Is it available in your native language? If not, help translate and make it accessible for others. :)
- 🌍 Did you know Wikidata is truly multilingual? Switch your interface to your native language from your preferences and experience it yourself. Look for items missing labels, descriptions or aliases in your language and give them a voice.
- 🗣 Wikidata contains a list of languages spoken around the world. However some of them are missing native labels in your language. Help by adding the missing labels and descriptions.
- ✍️ These languages uses script for writing purposes and some of them misses native labels and description in your language.
- (Tip: Change the interface language to your native language in Wikidata/Query to see which labels are missing.)
