  1. Wikidata to the Tyap Wikimedians community has been a place to document items which ordinarily would be found nowhere on the worldwide web of course notable to our community but unknown to the larger world. For this, my community would love to see Wikidata wax stronger year after year with more contents for human consumption. Cheers to knowledge preservation! Happy 12th Birthday, Wikidata!!!!!!!!!!!! Message from the Wikidata development team

Map of Wikidata’s geographic coverage as of October 2024

Today is Wikidata’s 12th birthday! 🎉 Over the years we’ve built something remarkable together. Let’s take a look back at the past year and look ahead to what’s next.

Over the past year we passed the incredible milestone of 2 billion edits, making Wikidata the most edited Wikimedia project of all time. This milestone was reached with about 24,300 editors per month, collecting and maintaining data in 113 million Items and 1.35 million Lexemes, building out a knowledge graph for everyone one edit at a time. Thank you to everyone who joins us in building the best knowledge graph and in helping give more people more access to more knowledge.

With that size also come challenges. The past year was very much marked by coping with growth on both the social and technical side. We moved forward with splitting the data in the Query Service, released the mul language code and other measures to help us better handle the current size of Wikidata. At the same time, more and more specialized projects are popping up in the Wikibase Ecosystem, which by now is a real alternative for data that lies outside Wikidata’s notability criteria or wants its own space for other reasons, such as Qichwabase, wikifcd and the Rematriation Project.

Addressing the technical and social challenges of Wikidata’s growth will continue to be a topic for the coming year as well. Some of it may involve rethinking what work we focus on in Wikidata, such as outlined in Jean-Frédéric’s recent blog post. We will also strive to bring the Wikibase Ecosystem closer together via federation and work towards feature parity between Wikidata and other Wikibase instances where that makes sense.

Another major focus of the past year was reuse. Wikidata’s data exists in order to be used to build great applications, to make the Wikimedia projects better and so much more. Wikidata now has a shiny new REST API, a big step on the way towards making Wikidata’s data easier to access. We’ve also started figuring out Wikidata’s role in a world with generative AI and Large Language Models and started a project to make our data more accessible in this context to ensure that, also going forward, people will have access to well referenced, trustworthy and up-to-date data. Developers who build with Wikidata’s data now have their own space in Wikidata with a spiffy new developer portal that holds all the important information they need and provides inspiration about what’s possible with Wikidata’s data. We’ve also seen great new applications being developed like WikiFlix, which you really should give a try if you haven’t already. Your next movie night will be sorted!

Over the next year we’ll continue to improve how developers access Wikidata’s data, further build out the integration between Wikidata and the other Wikimedia projects and see Wikifunctions make further progress and integrate Wikidata more to build the basis for Abstract Wikipedia.

Wikidata wouldn’t exist without its people. From Wikimania to the Data Modelling Days to the Leveling Up Days to the Lexicodays and more, it’s always inspiring to meet so many of you at events around the world. I hope you’re able to join one of the birthday parties in so many places around the world and look forward to seeing many of you at one of the next events like the Data Reuse Days.

Happy 12th birthday, Wikidata! Thank you to everyone who makes this project what it is. Here’s to many more 🥂

Lydia and the development team
