Exchanges are known by various codes. Knowing their codes is crucial for linking company tickers to exchanges.

This proposal is for the "common" code used often (eg NYSE, NASDAQ, etc)

• I don't know an official source for these codes.
• They are used eg by Google and CrunchBase; the examples above are to Google ticker info
• Only in the case of NYSEMKT (AMEX) I couldn't find the Google code
• I would appreciate comment from someone who knows what codes are used on other sites, eg Yahoo Finance
• These codes are often but not always given as altLabels of stock exchange (Q11691): https://w.wiki/Bo6 returns 160 (whereas the exchanges are over 1000)
• It's important to avoid ambiguity which is present in altLabels, eg ASE is Athens Stock Exchange (Q755341) or Amman Stock Exchange (Q2122308), BSE is Bahrain Bourse (Q1972649) or Baku Stock Exchange (Q2480956), etc
• Most are uppercase (though CB uses lowercase), but eg Luxembourg Stock Exchange (Q74662) has only "LuxSE"

@Vladimir Alexiev: Hi - in principle this seems like a good idea, but it's a little concerning that there's no standard source for this. Can you describe a scenario or two where you think this will be useful?   • A couple of more concerns: 100 uses is on the rather low side for a property. Also it doesn't really qualify as an external identifier when there are multiple values for the same exchange (3 of your 8 examples); it should probably be string valued, especially as there's no useful formatter URL for these. I think the best approach here would probably be to use an existing property like short name (P1813) maybe with a qualifier to indicate it is used by CrunchBase, or pointing to an item for "common exchange code" if that's a standard name. • Hi @ArthurPSmith: I would like to connect exchanges to their codes, so that I can make links from WD stock exchange (P414) to Google Finance and CrunchBase.
  • Despite the presence of a standard (MIC market code (P7534)), it seems to be used by Refinitiv only, and every other financial info provider uses their own code. Eg for Shenzhen Stock Exchange (Q517750) ISO MIC is "XSHE", Google & CB use "SHE", and Yahoo uses "SZ".
  • The ticker formatting URLs are also different, eg Wangsu Science & Technology (Q30944755) is listed at https://www.google.com/search?q=SHE%3A300017 and https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/300017.SZ
  • "100 is too little": still, that can link about 40-50k public companies in CB to their exchange!
  • As MIC market code (P7534) shows, there are about 1902 markets on 1085 exchanges. Google probably doesn't have codes about all these 1085 exchanges, but I believe it would have for at least 800. In time, we or other people will add them.
  • About the modeling: given that each financial info provider uses his own exchange code, I think we should have one prop "exchange code" with qualifier "used by". MIC market code (P7534) is already created as a separate prop, but it's a standard, has over a thousand, so it deserves that special status.

  • I think the short name (P1813) of 'Apple Inc.' should be 'Apple'. There are many cases where companies usually aren't called with their full name but with a short name like that and that's distinct from their exchange code like AAPL.     • There are different "short names" used for different purposes, it was never intended as a single-valued property, and if you look at the English aliases which include "acronym" and "abbreviation" those seem perfectly appropriate. In addition, in this case we are talking not about individual companies but about the EXCHANGES which are almost universally known by abbreviations like NYSE, AMEX, etc. ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:34, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
• Let's use code (P3295) with qualifier used by (P1535):
  • "code" is used for VIAF component props, eg: Union List of Artist Names ID (P245) has quality: VIAF component; code (P3295) "JPG"
