Planned use This is part of the WFD to Wikidata project aimed at making use of the WFD reporting data in Wikidata. See also motivation.

As part of EU Water quality reporting requirements an overall Ecological status must be reported for each water body. While this is built up by more specific quality elements (which are probably of interest as a separate property) it is the overall assessment which is important (legally). The allowed values are simply 1-5 + unknown where 1 is "high status" and 5 is "bad status". Rather than simply have numbers here (with no explanations other than what we can stick into the description) I believe it is more appropriate to follow the example of IUCN protected areas category (P814) and create 5 items holding the value and their meaning and require (filter) that only these values are allowed for the property. The full-length definitions of the status are available at pp.38 of Directive 2000/60/EC.

This information (data from 2010) is already in use for lakes on sv.wp (see e.g. infobox in w:sv:Orlången) but new official data from 2016 is now available (for all EU countries). It is therefore an excellent opportunity to ensure Wikidata gets used now that this data has to be updated anyway. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 13:27, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

A comment on the domain. A WFD Water Body has a specific definition which does not entirely overlap with body of water (Q15324) (e.g. oceans would not be included). A WFD Water Body is primarily an administrative subdivision (rather than geographical) so while it will often overlap with a lake there are occurrences where one lake is made up of multiple WFD Water Bodies. Because of this I'm considering whether it's worth creating a separate item for WFD Water Body, and tie the domain of this property to that. For 1:1 lake/WFD Water Body this would simply mean an extra P31 tag whereas it allows for a clearer separation in the cases where there isn't an overlap (much more common for rivers which are normally subdivided). Symbol support vote.svg Support this looks like a well-crafted proposal on an important area, thanks for preparing this. ArthurPSmith (talk) 19:29, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Is there any other information which I can provide in order for us to move on with this proposal? Would you like me to set up the supporting items first? /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 11:47, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
It's only 5 items? I think it might help to add those and put in a specific example in the template above so it's very clear what the plan is. I'm not sure if somebody else has anything to say on this... 18:04, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
@André Costa (WMSE): Having specific example would be great. ChristianKl (talk) 14:06, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll create the needed items and put together an example when I get back from the Wikimedia Hackathon next week. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 14:24, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
