Motivation

The PREN is the first value to consider when you select a stainless steel for corrosion intensive environnements. To be used on undersea industrial equipments without anodic protection, the stainless steel must have a PREN > 32 (actually often more because of design induced corrosion). This mean that the most used marine stainless steel, the SAE 316L stainless steel (Q28453931) (also known as A4 class of screws) is not suitable for these uses unless it is tied to a big metallic structure providing electrons.
