Transparent identification of authoritative sources of period definitions used to describe data with temporal attributes. Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 20:23, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

(Moved from description - this is too long for a description!) PeriodO data contributors include the British Museum, the ARIADNE project, the Digital Index of North American Archaeology, the German Archaeological Institute, the Archaeology Data Service (UK), English Heritage, the Hypermedia Research Unit at the University of South Wales, the Pleiades spatial gazetteer, Fasti Online, the UCLA Encyclopedia of Egyptology, the Levantine Ceramics Project, the China Historical GIS, the Portable Antiquities scheme, and a number of other projects and individuals. Other definitions were gathered from published sources in print or on line (e.g. the US Library of Congress). The PeriodO project was developed with grants from the NEH and IMLS, and is co-directed by Adam Rabinowitz (University of Texas at Austin) and Ryan Shaw (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), with the support of the University of Texas Libraries. • Symbol support vote.svg Support this sounds useful. However, the example is incomplete, there doesn't seem to be a corresponding item. @Susannaanas: can you add the item for the Pedley collection (I'm not sure exactly what it is from your link - a book?) to use for a proper example here? Or find another example that refers to an existing wikidata item? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:00, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
You are right. We are complementing with the example today with the help of the subject experts in order to get the mapping right. – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 18:35, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support. YULdigitalpreservation (talk) 15:11, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support. The example should be completed however (as per ArthurPSmith) - it will make the intended use much more clear. An "allowed values" regexp on both properties (collection and definition id) could help avoiding mistakes during input. Jneubert (talk) 16:09, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
    • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose There is no proven need to reflect PeriodO collections in Wikidata. The proposer hasn't bothered to give even one example --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 10:31, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
  • @Susannaanas: can you give us an update on this and the related proposal for the actual periods? I do think this is a useful source, but we're missing proper examples in these proposals. ArthurPSmith (talk) 16:56, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
  • @Susannaanas: I am marking this as  Not done for now, given that the proposal has been inactive for a few months and we still lack an example to see how the property would be used. Feel free to reopen once this is solved. − Pintoch (talk) 12:15, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
