Motivation[edit]

The Gazetteer for Scotland, first released in 1995 and continuously extended since then, provides editorially researched encyclopedic entries for over 23,000 areas, places, and features in Scotland. As well as the summary pages that would be directly linked by the IDs, additional tabs on the right of the pages give access to further information (including cross-references to related places, people, and events), to a map (including flags for related places), and often to a lengthier historical gazetteer entry. Matching between the site and our items would be a very useful cross-reference for our coverage of places and other geographical features in Scotland. Discussion[edit]

@Pigsonthewing: Hi Andy. As far as I know, the geographical sub-types are the five given above: "towns" (for settlements of all sizes), "councils", "counties", "parishes", and "features". There are also "people", for which I have proposed a separate property; plus a limited number of "events", which I don't propose to match. Whilst it would be nice to just have the numeric parts of the IDs, five separate properties for the geographical elements seemed to me to be too many, so that's why I suggested the scheme above. @Eihel: Regex looks fine. And the name change makes sense. Thank you! Jheald (talk) 12:24, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
