Ideal would be if the value is not a simple number, but a length value which can be converted into several different units (e.g. m, ft, km, ...) and then each Wikipedia can choose which value(s) they want to show. It think this is a general requirement not only for this property (was already requested in road length, e.g.), we should discuss this on meta:Wikidata/Development/Representing_values. --Faux (talk) 09:37, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed byYLSS (talk)

en:Template:Infobox station currently offers two parameters, "depth" and "elevation". However, they are mutually exclusive, so possibly there should be only one property, or not? I am also unsure about more specific name for this propetry(-ies); "depth of platform" and "track elevation" would have been good, but en:Template:Infobox station suggests providing "The depth of the primary platform below ground level", while according to Russian standards, "Глубина заложения" is measured as the difference between the track level and the ground level. Should we enforce uniformity of measurement or leave it to local traditions? The difference (height of platform) can supposedly be readily calculated, as there should only be a couple of standards for en:railway platform height within a single system. P.S. I do not propose implementing this one immediately, just adding it to the list of "pending" properties. YLSS (talk) 12:17, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

— Ivan A. Krestinin (talk) 17:04, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
YLSS (talk) 18:25, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Support. — Ivan A. Krestinin (talk) 19:08, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
К тому же, какой смысл предполагается под altitude - высота над уровнем земли в данной местности или высота над уровнем моря? "value for the height over a reference plane , for the globe "Earth" that would be the "WGS84"" - что конкретно здесь имеется ввиду? YLSS (talk) 10:05, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

->See Properties in Physics: Units? Could you please explain to us how this unit-conversion will be implemented and why we do not have to agree on some units? When I enter a value how does wikidata know which unit i mean?--Svebert (talk) 11:23, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Of course there will be an internal unit – this will be SI-Units for sure since this is the international technical standard. What's important is, that this won't be important since the system will have a build in unitconversion. When using a statement of an item in Wikipedia you will be able to say witch unit the value should have. And when adding (or viewing) a statement in you will be able to add it in any unit you like nut have to declare witch unit it is in. It hasn't been implemented jet and I haven't seen any mokups, so I can't tell you how it will work, maybe you'll have to input-fields (one for the value one for the uncertainty) and one dropdown with the units, maybe also one input-field where you can enter something liken "500 Squaremeters" and the system recognizes the unit, or something similar. I also don't know if this kind of flexible view and inputmechanism will be available from the first version on, but even if not, there are a lot of good JavaScript-developers here, witch can quickly build an easy gadget for this. So there is no need for discussions about miles or kilometers, or for creating two properties – Wikidata will use SI-units as internal units and have an unitconversion allowing to use witch unit you like! -- MichaelSchoenitzer (talk) 19:16, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Support but use it also for albums or sound recordings.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 06:38, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is a better idea to make an extra property for the length of a song/album, because for those you also want to save the amount of seconds the song takes. For movies you only save the amount of minutes that it takes. Robin0van0der0vliet (talk) 11:38, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment In my opinion this property should use datatype time with hours, minutes and seconds. It is not just a number. Operas can have a runtime of hours and you can aproximate it to some degree, maybe ±10 min. Films and DVD have an exact runtime wich is determined down to one second, albums and single tracks as well.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 08:11, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I did not know that datetype time was could be used for time length, I thought it was only for a certain point in time. I updated the template to reflect this. I also renamed the property to "duration" instead of "runtime", since it is more appropriate considering what it can be used for. "runtime" and "length" should be the alias of this property.
Yes, time is for points in time, this property requires quantities with units. Danneks (talk) 18:14, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Same like Giftzwerg 88, is better wait for datatype time. Without it, movie like en:Modern Times Forever (Stora Enso Building, Helsinki) is long 864000 sec. or 14400 min. with datatype time is long 10 day and if you want you can transform in hours, minutes. --ValterVB (talk) 21:24, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

        • Items currently using P407 are either works or names. For names, this property would be used. For works, it should mean language of work. Proposing with the aim of splitting website account on (P553) (see Wikidata:Project chat#Website user names)).

There are various notable people in Wikidata who are also Wikimedians (including some who are notable for work they've done as Wikimedians), so people obviously want to link to their username. There are a variety of projects in a variety of editions but now that SUL was finalised, I think it could be stored as a single Wikimedia username.

There might be a better URL which lists all the accounts which could be used as the URL formatter, but this is the only thing I'm aware of right now.

Does anyone know which characters are/aren't allowed in usernames?

no, the link between the real identity of the person and its wm identity is not already stored, except for admins or crats. A lot of considered university teachers or so, that publish in reviews, could not like to see their wm-identity displayed this way, especially, since the Global account now gives access to all contributions in all wm projects in a few clicks :/
to me, this property could be acceptable only if the contributor did it him/herself : i.e. only statements added by concerned contributor would be ok, and even then, I would be very cautious… :( --Hsarrazin (talk) 19:24, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nonsense. We have over 80 instances of P553 for Wikimedia projects with user names. We also have many real names and user names associated with each other in realiable sources. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:33, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
wow 80 !! :D — That really justifies a new property !
reliable sources does not mean that it makes those info readily available to anybody, which will be the case if those are added to wikidata in a directly usable and re-usable way (through VIAF among others). Which, in my opinion, poses problems of privacy. I personally know people, who are in VIAF, ISNI, BNF, etc., and who contribute wp, but do not want, under any circumstance, this info possibly disclosed. This property would be very problematic for some of them. Not everybody is lucky enough to work in places where wikipedia is well considered. :/ --Hsarrazin (talk) 21:43, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Many times I go to Wikipedia and read all about an animal (present or historic) and find out lots of information but have to guess at the size. This is odd because it's one of the easiest things to quantify. I am actually proposing two parameters, length and mass, but whereas nearly all animals have a specific mass, not all have a standard way to measure length. Soap (talk) 20:16, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose All individuals of emperor penguin (Q161829) have this weight? --Succu (talk) 20:40, 4 August 2015 (UTC) : From enwiki: „The male and female are similar in plumage and size, reaching 122 cm (48 in) in height and weighing from 22 to 45 kg (49 to 99 lb)“.[reply]
We could always specify a range, of course. It's not intended to be absolute pinpoint-perfect measurements, more of an idea of what the average is. Especially so with fossils where two scientists can look at the same fossil and come up with vastly different estimates of how much fat, muscle, etc it had had in life. Soap (talk) 20:53, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So your proposal is about human body weight (Q620876)? --Succu (talk) 21:27, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose We have already a pending proposal about this property: see Wikidata:Property_proposal/Pending/2#Mass_2. Snipre (talk) 09:44, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that seems to be intended for physics; will be extensible to anything? If so then yeah, I withdraw this proposal. I didnt see that when I did the pre-search. Also, either the "height" or "length" proposals would answer my other request. Soap (talk) 15:01, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Soap: We will create one property Mass and this property can be used for human, animal, car or any other individual element. Then depending on the cases we can think about specific mass properties but this is dependent on the "numeric datatype with unit" features. The best is to withdraw your proposal until this datatype is created because we can't define anything about something which doesn't exist yet. The new datatype is currently under development and we expect to have something in the next months (before the end of the year at least). Snipre (talk) 15:14, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Improving Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (Q158822) I found this property apparently missing. Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 14:27, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • We need a better classification of properties. Such things happen quite often, right? Thierry Caro (talk) 21:19, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • improved search would also help. I couldn't spot it among the large "number of" properties and searching "spans" just came up blank. Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 01:52, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We should probably use properties for this type (P1963) more thoroughly. So that someone working on bridges would immediately find on bridge (Q12280) what he needs. I have also started to deploy inception (P571) on properties so that people on Wikipedia may have an easier way to follow new properties from there. Thierry Caro (talk) 02:30, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Recalling that it exists, I found it using Special:Search/number of spans, but I think it should be possible to find it by merely typing "number of spans" in the search box. --- Jura 04:38, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Support on principle, but I think that needs more thought and that it is incomplete as is, and related to the "processes" problem : process usually involves subprocesses, and for example the "biscuit" example seems incomplete as it involves other parts than the oven one. It is pretty close to the "algorithm" problem. It has input and outputs, (materials in the case of building a physical object, datas in the case of an algorithm). Two processes to build the same kind of objects exists that do not involves the same materials. So should the materials be tights to the processes or to the object ? author  TomT0m / talk page 10:47, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The database AcademiaNet was created and is maintained by the Robert Bosch Stiftung (Q319347). It features entries for more than 1500 excellent female scientists and will be augmented continuously. It is already used as a reference in some 250 dewiki articles (see w:de:Vorlage:AcademiaNet). I've asked the editorial board of the database if they are interested in matching our items with their database; if they reply positively, I'll ask them for a list of entries and start matching with the help of Mix'n'Match.

Update: We already have a full list of entries here: w:de:Benutzer:Berita/Academia. This list seems complete as of December 10, 2014. So all that's left to do is making sure that we update it regularly. Maybe the editorial board will help us with that.

Motivation. Some items have as property a velocity. A qualifier can be used to distinguish different kind of velocity (orbital, mean, max, min...) Paperoastro (talk) 21:16, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Support This property seems useful and applicable well beyond astronomy. Modifying information like average speed and maximum speed seem best to specify as Wikidata qualifiers. Also, I'd just note here that speed != velocity. Presumably that distinction would make sense to account for in translations, where possible. Emw (talk) 14:36, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately in Russian they are denotated by 1 term - "скорость". Infovarius (talk) 10:11, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Moreover, in these few infobox deployed (like fr:Modèle:Infobox Biographie2 or fr:Modèle:Infobox Artiste), image and legend are the only parameters on the code of the infobox (Example : [4]). --Nouill (talk) 05:43, 29 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I took out the sample added just now, as it included markup. This wont work here it's unlikely to work elsewhere than at frwiki. BTW, to add the date, the "point in time" qualifier should do. --- Jura 14:14, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, that was the first real-life example I found by looking at the frwiki pages that use that template, the value was "Louis-Charles Mahé de la Bourdonnais<br />Portrait post-mortem réalisé par [[Jean Henry Marlet|Marlet]] à partir d'un moulage du visage<ref>''[[Le Palamède]], Revue mensuelle des échecs et autres jeux'', 15 décembre 1841.</ref>.". That brings up the question: is the value of the proposed property limited by Wikidata to no links and no tags? which would mean it can be used only in some of the infoboxes, making it fail the aim that the image and the legend are at one place so that one is never changed without the other. Oliv0 (talk) 17:13, 31 August 2015 (UTC) Added: I found another real example "Matthieu Abrivard après sa victoire dans le Prix de Cornulier en 2005." which I believe is not controversial. Oliv0 (talk) 06:18, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • This property should only be used as a qualifier to one of the "image" properties so it is attached to that image. I suggest that we encourage editors to add images and mark one of them 'preferred' instead of deleting images - though you can always revert the deletion of an image with it's qualifiers. Joe Filceolaire (talk) 18:33, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Filceolaire: now I tried to specify this constraint in the property doc above by saying "domain: image file", I am not sure this is what "domain" is for and I leave it to experienced wikidata editors to do it the right way. Oliv0 (talk) 08:02, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unless I'm completely mistaken, the type for this should be multilingual text, not monolingual text. - Nikki (talk) 15:03, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
