Motivation[edit]
The CIA's World Factbook contains detailed information on 267 world entities. Having a link from Wikidata to these country accounts would very useful, as the information is authoritative and updated annually. Note that some entities have the same code, so the same code should be permitted on multiple Wikidata items. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 02:00, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
Discussion[edit]
- Comment ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code (P297) has that as a formatter already (Property:P297#P3303). --- Jura 16:23, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- @UWashPrincipalCataloger: Is it correct that this only differs from ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code (P297) by being lower-case vs upper-case, or are there some different entities covered? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:45, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: They are not always the same codes. For example, the code in The World Factbook for American Samoa is aq, but in ISO it is AS. The World Factbook also has codes for entities not listed in ISO, e.g. Akrotiri has code ax. Code AX in ISO is for the Åland Islands. Adam Schiff (talk) 18:15, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Jura1: That third-party formatter property in P297 is not correct. See my comment above about the codes not always being the same. Adam Schiff (talk) 18:37, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- Comment seems to be the same as FIPS 10-4 (countries and regions) (P901): see Q9143535#P901, Q5689#P901. --- Jura 08:28, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
- While it may be the same code, the FIPS 10-4 (countries and regions) (P901) property does not take you anywhere. Having this proposed property that links out to The World Factbook itself will provide people with a lot of information about the country. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 17:09, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
- As P901 doesn't have a formatter URL, I suppose we could add this one. --- Jura 05:53, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose I checked Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area (Q9143535) (which is different from Akrotiri (Q421232)) and indeed https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ax.html is about that UK base (not the GR island it's part of), so Jura1 is right.
- @Adam Schiff: If the code list is the same, it's better to add alias "World Factbook country code" to FIPS 10-4 (countries and regions) (P901) (I'd even make that the primary name) and add formatterURL. Thanks for your contribution!!
- We'll need a custom resolver to lowercase the code, since https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/AX.html doesn't resolve. --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 09:15, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Vladimir Alexiev, Adam Schiff, Jura1: However, FIPS 10-4 includes subnational regions (with a numeric extension, like AU01 in the property examples), and those do not seem to be supported by the CIA formatter. ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:47, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
- Maybe it can be made to work with MediaWiki:Gadget-AuthorityControl.js. --- Jura 19:54, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
- However we manage to get a link to The World Factbook online, I'm in favor. It's an important source of information that should have links from Wikidata. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 23:58, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hmm, I think I'll take a look at linking FIPS 10-4 to the World Factbook by just stripping off the numeric bits (and lowercasing) - it will just go to the country rather than a subregion, but that seems at least somewhat useful and better than nothing. ArthurPSmith (talk) 19:25, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- And this is now done - see FIPS 10-4 (countries and regions) (P901). @UWashPrincipalCataloger: - ok to close this request? ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:10, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

- @UWashPrincipalCataloger: would you like to add your excellent examples (and Akrotyri)? They should not go to waste! --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 00:33, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- All but one were already in their respective items. I added the missing one. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 17:41, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
