New York City Neighborhood Tabulation area ID[edit]

Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Place

DescriptionThe NYC Department of City Planning maintains a public dataset with geographic shapes for neighborhoods in NYC. (NTA aka NYNTA) Each of the neighborhoods in the dataset has a unique identifier of that neighborhood. We have Wikipedia articles on many of those same neighborhoods. The dataset makes some compromises so that shapes meet constraints like no overlapping, no splitting a single USGS census tract into multiple NTAs.
Data typeExternal identifier
Domainitems of neighborhood in New York City (Q287414)
Allowed values(BK|BX|MN|QN|SI)\d{2}

Example 4Port Richmond (Q7230888) → SI28

Number of IDs in source~195 but some of those may not actually be neighborhoods (I think they include shapes for areas like cemeteries?)
Expected completenesseventually complete (Q21873974)

Motivation[edit]

The original inspiration was for use on Wikidata:Translatathon NYC/es but I'm sure there's other uses I'm not thinking of right now. OTOH since they don't map exactly to neighborhoods maybe they shouldn't be linked to the neighborhoods at all? and what about NTAs that contain more than one on wiki neighborhood? should we have a new item for each NTA and then link the NTA items to the existing neighborhood items?
