Lemma
[edit]In Egyptology, the phonological, Latin-based transliteration of Ancient Egyptian (Q2482781) of the lemma best represents a lemma. Generally, Egyptian spelling and Egyptological transliteration only represent the consonants and glides. Due to a high amount of consonantal homonyms, lemmata need to be identified eighther by an ID or by the combination of its transliteration and a selected spelling in Egyptian hieroglyphs (Q132659), which provides more information than the transliteration.
Transliteration and transliteration systems
[edit]There are many different transliteration systems in Egyptology. On the occasion of the International Congress of Egyptologists in 2023, a working group suggested a particular variant as recommended for digital Egyptological data: the Leiden Unified Transliteration/Transcription (Q131362896) (LUT). It is suggested to add the transliteration in LUT format, using the language tag "egy-x-Q131362896". We have asked to register the valid IETF languange tag "egy-Egyp" in Wikidata (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T381585).
The codepoints for the transliteration symbols are enumerated in the section "Unicode" on the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transliteration_of_Ancient_Egyptian#Unicode.
Hieroglyphs
[edit]It is recommended to add ideally common, informative hieroglyphic spelling to the lemma entry. It is suggested to add the hieroglyphic spelling in Unicode (Egyptian Hieroglyphs (Q2494183)), using the language tag "egy-x-Q132659". We have asked to register the languange tag "egy-Latn-x-lut2023" or "egy-Latn-lut2023" in Wikidata (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T381585).
