Sindal (town) vs Sindal (municipality)[edit]

Items involved: Q3177752Talk, Q1552182Talk Status: Pictogram voting question.svg   partially resolved

"Sindal" refers to either the former municipality (merged with other municipalities in 2006 to become Hjørring Municipality) or the town that was formed when the status of municipality was removed from Sindal. Some wikis have the two in the same article, while some have separated them into two articles. --Wylve (talk) 16:19, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello, the title of this section is not totally accurate. Q...42 is a concrete patriotic song of the 19th century ("Das Lied der Deuteschen", serving since 1922 as the German national anthem), and Q...41 is the German national anthem, a position that has been filled in by different songs. Some language versions have this neat distinction, as German Wikipedia, others take Q...42 (the song) and treat it as if it were the same (e.g., Dutch Wikipedia). By the way, I think that the aliases in the items should be altered. / This problem occurs with several national anthems. In the USA and France, for example, the specific song and the anthem are more or less the same. In Austria, there have been changes, but nonetheless, German Wikipedia has a redirect from "Land der Berge, Land am Strome" to "Österreichische Bundeshymne" [Austrian Federal anthem] (Q126658) (the song is the anthem only since 1947). The German article treats "previous Austrian anthems". Ziko (talk) 14:18, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Great explanation, why don't you work it into the English and German descriptions of both items? Littledogboy (talk) 15:16, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

enwiki has a page for en:Luigi (name) that links to it:Luigi, but it:Luigi links to en:Louis and other variations of the name (e.g. nl:Lodewijk). So the "edit links" on it:Luigi links to Q210593 but those are not the same links on the itwiki page which still has the local links to en:Louis that I'd rather not change on my own w/o discussion. Aude (talk) 03:20, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
  • I think Wikidata has it right. You didn't include item Q4245067 (en:Luigi (name)), so I added it above. Clearly it:Luigi for example should link to en:Luigi (name) rather than en:Louis, etc. Without coordination between local users in checking/removing local links, and Wikidata setup, ... well it'll be interesting to see if these ever work themselves out. So I wouldn't change the Wikidata setup. Espeso (talk) 05:19, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

  • The items for given names should be mostly consistent with the handling of first names at Wikidata. Cyrillic spellings may need to be moved to new items (but this is true for many such items). For disambiguation pages, an automated cleanup is suggested.

Items involved: Q2403634Talk, Q5378501Talk, Q2644088Talk Status: X mark.svg   not resolved

Q5378501 discusses mechanical advantage; Q2403634 discusses gear ratios. The En-wiki interlanguage links are in significant conflict. The ones I haven't been able to resolve are: da:Gearing, de:Übersetzung_(Technik) eo:Transmisia rilatumo, and sv:Kraftöverföring. On some I have a decent guess based on equations, but I'd appreciate if people who speak the relevant languages could look into these. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 10:21, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Tried to look into this a bit...
  • I put da:Gearing as mechanical advantage. The Danish word gear seems not to mean a gear but a device in English, and I kind of understood the article via Swedish.
  • de:Übersetzung (Technik) seems too general: "In mechanical engineering (I guess), a device that translates the value of a physical quantity into another value of the same quantity with both values remaining in a constructively stable ratio with one another is described as Übersetzung or Transmission." Then again, the article also states that the term is used also for the measure that is the ratio itself, with the symbol i.
  • sv:Kraftöverföring is about transferring force between, for example, a motor and a wheel. I think it's neither of these items.
  • eo:Transmisia rilatumo is about some ratio categorised in hydraulics: "The inverse value of the transfer of movement frequency in a constant state."
I'm tempted to think only the Danish one was about the exact same concept as one of the items. I'm not sure about the German one though, and I didn't quite get the hang of what the Esperanto article was going on about. Enoirditalk 14:44, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Yep. A 6-way7-way8-way conflict. I've done a significant amount of work to resolve it; normally I'd trust my own judgment and say I'd taken care of it, but I think this situation is anomalous enough that I should report it here so that others can check my work. The most notable decision is probably my choice to give the Russian article its own item (Q6133589). The simple answer is that I couldn't find any item that approximated the topic closely enough; obviously if anyone can find a better solution, I welcome it. Anyways, if anyone has any questions about decisions I made to put certain articles in certain items, please do ask. Thanks. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 12:09, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
Just added Q6198974 to this, a disambiguation page on the term "Razzia". — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 23:54, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
Q257931 had a mishmash of articles, some of which were about provocation and some about sting operations or something similar. Thus, I created a new item. The old one, Q257931 provocation, now has the articles on provocation. In the new one, Q6283446 sting operation, I put the three articles on sting operations and similar stuff from the provocation item, plus added the similar-themed pages found in the interwiki links of these articles (having checked them). I say similar because I'm not sure if they are actually the exact same thing.
So it's 8-way now. On another note, the disambiguations Q6132400 provocation and Q6198974 razzia seem to be fine.
Continuing about conflicts, the articles in Q6130595 police raid don't quite match. The English one is about a tactic specific to early morning; at least sh:Racija seems to be about, basically, any police operation that is unexpected. sv:Razzia is about systematic police inspections of an area (or an apartment). The Finnish one is about both police raids and military raids – well, frankly, it has some serious trouble deciding what it should be about. Haven't looked into the others in detail yet. Enoirditalk 14:44, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, the English article is awful. I've been meaning to boldly slash a lot of it. The emphasis on the early morning seems to me to be largely POV/original research. I think that in cases like these we are within our rights to categorize the article according to an idealized version of it, not the crappy current version. So even if the police raid articles are somewhat disparate, I think we're better off to have them all together than not. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 22:01, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
I went and edited the Finnish article a little to make it recognise police raids as its main subject (this was supported by its categories, stub marking and disambiguation notice, too). And looking through all of these items, I'd say a whole seven of them, all but Q6128777, are completely fine and in no more conflict. I'm not sure about Q6128777. Is it supposed to be specifically about the Arabic/religious raids? Some of them seem to focus too much on raids in general, while the English one specifies itself to be about both the warriors and the war, kind of dividing the article in two and yet being named after the warriors. ja:火力発電所 should be removed from Q200297 a it is correctly listed under Q1434958. If Q1434958 refers to "fossil-fuel power station" de:Kohlekraftwerk, nl:Kolencentrale, nn:Kolkraftverk, sv:Kolkraftverk and probably other language links as well should be removed from this site, as they treat coal fired power stations only.--ペーター (talk) 10:41, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
I have created a new item called "coal power plant" here for the links that seem to be specific to coal. ja:火力発電 is already present in item Q1434958. Should this be moved to a new item called "thermal power generation"? ja:火力発電所 seems to translate to "thermal power plant" which is what the item at Q200297 currently describes. Delsion23 (talk) 22:21, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
Moved some more (cs, pl) to Q6558431. --Matthiasb (talk) 17:50, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
The Japanese word 火力発電所 is usually (mis-)translated "thermal power station" by the media. However, the English and German wikipedia articles on thermal power generation include nuclear, solar thermal and geothermal power generation, while the Japanese wikipedia article on 火力発電所 treats fossil fuel power stations only. The word 火力発電所 (as well as the English word "thermal power station") is used by the media in Japan to contrast "fire power stations" (literal translation of 火力発電所) against nuclear power stations. I therefore removed 火力発電所 from Q200297.--ペーター (talk) 11:48, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Q2626877/Q1367215 (nautical terms)[edit]

Items involved: Q2626877Talk, Q1367215Talk Status: X mark.svg   not resolved

There seems to be two problems here:
  1. German wikipedia has split the list into two: de:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (A bis M), de:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (N bis Z) and also has the article de:Seemannssprache
  2. French wikipedia has two articles: fr:Lexique de la navigation à voile, fr:Vocabulaire maritime

Maybe some French and German speakers could help sort it out.

  1. The both lists correspond to Q2626877, but are split, as was said, while de:Seemannssprache has nothing to do with both entries above, therefor will create item for that one. (Q7041009)
  2. The first French is a part of the second list, as it contains only terms used when sailing (as in sail boats). I would put the second into Q2626877, the first would stand alone.
  3. I also think that pt:Anexo:Terminologia náutica should be moved into Q2626877.
--Matthiasb (talk) 18:10, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
I agree with your suggestions. Maybe German wikipedia can be convinced to merge de:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (A bis M) and de:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (N bis Z)? It seems to have been split because of the limitations of article size in "the old days" (see de:Diskussion:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (A bis M)#Zu groß?. Q37137 (Contralto/Alto)[edit]

Items involved: Q37137Talk, Q6983813Talk Status: X mark.svg   not resolved

Q37137 refers to Contralto in some languages and to Alto in other languages. en:Alto and fr:Alto (voix) have no Wikidata item. Rsocol (talk) 19:15, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
By reading Talk:Q37137, I understand that the confusion is caused by de:Alt (Stimmlage), which could mean en:Contralto as well as en:Alto. Maybe we should have three items: the first for en:Alto, fr:Alto (voix), etc; the second for en:Contralto, fr:Contralto, etc; and the third for de::Alt (Stimmlage), hu:Alt and other languages which use the same term for both notions. Rsocol (talk) 19:35, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll have a go at sorting it out. I think that there should be two items, one for alto and one for contralto. It seems that some languages have an article on the two, and other languages have an article on "alto" which then has a sentance or section on "contralto". I'll mark as resolved if I find no problems. Delsion23 (talk) 11:04, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
You were right that some of them treat the two almost equally, which made things difficult. Can someone please have a look over items Q37137 (contralto) and Q6983813 (alto) to check to see if this solution is ok. If not, we may need to create a new item for "alto and contralto". Q48349 seems to concern the concept empire in general, while Q499146 concerns "imperium" in a more specific Roman context. I'm not sure in which group la:imperium itself belongs. I'm also not sure about the Slavic languages. Most of them seem to have an -i(j)a ending for general "empire" and a latin -ium ending for the specific Roman. Bosnian bs:Imperija is however connected to the second group, and instead they have bs:Carstvo (as also Serbian Царство etc) in the general Q48349 group. Are these basically synonyms? Q1125312 (Microbiological culture)/Kultivierung[edit]

Items involved: Q1125312Talk, KultivierungTalk Status: Pictogram voting question.svg   partially resolved

In the German WP there are 2 articles: de:Bakterienkultur is contained in Q1125312 and you can see similarities to en:Microbiological culture. But the article de:Kultivierung is about the same topic, describing more how to get a microbiological culture, it can be compared with es:Cultivo (microbiología), but this Spanish article is part of Q1125312. In nl:Reincultuur (microbiologie) – also part of Q1125312 – the topic is „Reincultuur“ (= „Reinkultur“ in German), which matches a chapter of de:Kultivierung. I don't speak enough French or any of the other languages to compare the content of the articles in Q1125312, but it looks like there is need for more than one Wikidata item. Any other opinions? --A doubt (talk) 22:39, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
Hopefully I have solved the interwiki conflict by creating a new item Q10297148 (bacterial culture) for some of the WP articles. Others stay in Q1125312 (microbiological culture), while some are in item Q357279 (cultivation in a general biological meaning). But I am not familiar with all languages involved, so it would be helpful if other users would check the items. --A doubt (talk) 22:59, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Some languages have one word for 2 (first or last). Present order(may be wrong?): plane figure / curve / its length. Also in topology - more general set. Infovarius (talk) 20:15, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Given that I was adressed in such unkind manner, I will respond here: I have tried to fix the conflicts created by Infovarius (mostly regarding eswiki links) and these were the results: 1, 2 and 3. I haven't marked the issue as resolved because I think it needs to be further reviewed. Andreasmperu (talk) 19:37, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
Sorry for unkindness. The reason was that I tried to fix the conflicts, and you have restored the initial wrong links. As I said en:Circumference has no connection to be:Акружнасць. "Circumferència" (catalan) and "circunferencia" (spanish) mean the curve as their main meaning, as it used to happen in other languages some time ago (e.g. french).--Pere prlpz (talk) 15:19, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

I think the questions about the curve and its length are quite set, but I'm concerned with the bounded figure (the surface inside a circle). ro:Disc (formă geometrică) and fr:Disque (géométrie) deal with the planar figure, but they are linked to en:Disk (mathematics) and ca:Disc (topologia) an es:Disco (topología) and other articles which are about the topological concept of disk. I think ro:Disc (formă geometrică) and fr:Disque (géométrie) should be moved to link to ca:Cercle and es:círculo (linking those to en:area of a disk is debatable but I think it's useful, too).--Pere prlpz (talk) 16:23, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Furthermore, it:cerchio, ast:círculu and an:cerclo should remain linked to ca:Cercle and es:círculo, instead of other articles more related to topology. As I said, ro:Disc (formă geometrică) and fr:Disque (géométrie) (planar figures) are more related to these than to en:Disk (mathematics) (mostly a topological concept).--Pere prlpz (talk) 15:50, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Yes, in French there are two words: "langage" for the general human faculty and "langue" for individual languages. Some of the articles on Q35, such as en:, are about both the Kingdom and the constituent country of the kingdom which is an EU member, and some, such as da:, are specifically about the constituent country. (The English article, for example, shows two maps in the infobox, one of Denmark in the EU with other parts of the kingdom in gray, and one of the entire kingdom.) Should some of the Q35 articles be moved to Q756617? Or should a new item be created for articles that specifically cover both topics? --Yair rand (talk) 04:26, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
I think that the pages about both Denmark and the Kingdom of Denmark should be moved to Kingdom of Denmark, because Denmark falls within the Kingdom and not the other way around. I don't prefer to make another item. Sander.v.Ginkel (talk) 15:40, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
en:Denmark is mostly about Kingdom of Denmark (although for instance some of the data in the infobox is only about Denmark proper). So from a database point of view it would be correct to move the article and other similar articles to Q756617, but it would also be preferable if redirects could be left in Q35 so articles about Denmark in other languages can have language links to these languages. Byrial (talk) 16:37, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
I don't think that adding a bunch of redirects is the typical way to fix issues like this. I think wikitext redirects in the articles themselves are supposed to be used in this situation. --Yair rand (talk) 22:36, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

municipality/capital region/city? Seems to be quite a mess with the interwikis. --Wikijens (talk) 10:26, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Looks ok to me - three wikidata pages each with a clearly defined scope. Labels in other languages seem to reflect the same scope. Wikipedia page links seem to follow the scope as well. Filceolaire (talk) 23:15, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

The scope of Q9005 is quite odd, actually. It's more or less Q9005 = Q239 + Q240 where Q240 also includes the subject of Q239 by definition. Then people move interwikis around without actually understanding what the articles in different languages actually say. In my opinion, Q9005 is completely redundant to Q240. — Yerpo Eh? 06:26, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
I totally agree with you that most people move interwiki without understanding. This is quite frustrating and one of the reasons I participate less an less in Wikidata. About Q9005: It's not completely redundant to Q240. There a several Wikipedias that distinguish clearly between Brussel as a city (Q239) and the region of Brussels-Capital (Q240), and some Wikipedias that don't. In Q9005, both things are described. Geographically, Q9005 and Q240 may be identical, but on the statistic level for example, there are very different data. In a long term, Q9005 should become obsolete, but only if all Wikipedias start to distinguish between Brussels as a city and as a region correctly. --Monsieurbecker (talk) 04:20, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

There's only one Occitan article in Q9005 which was created by a bot (why?). It refers to Brussel/Bruxelles as a city of 1 mln inhabitants, which is factually incorrect. That article should be deleted, and as a result Q9005 could cease to exist as well. I've asked the WP.OC admin Boular to look into it. --Midas02 (talk) 09:17, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Q14467584... Littledogboy (talk) 14:10, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Probably a systematic mistake – frwiki mentions three concepts, not 2:

  1. agglomération de Bruxelles
  2. Région de Bruxelles-Capitale
  3. Ville/commune de Bruxelles

Littledogboy (talk) 14:13, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Ok, I've done some clean-up between Q239/Q240 and tried to put the articles in the correct categories. The ones that don't belong to either, the left-overs, have been added to Q9005. However. I checked all languages, and the vast majority of the articles are extremely faulty, probably because they were translated from other articles which were faulty to start with, so chosing between Q239 and Q240 is sometimes arbitrary. Much more can't be done without rewriting each and every article. They are combining data of the municipality with those of the region, leading to hybrid articles that are neither one nor the other. They often describe Brussels as a city of 1 mln inhabitants, which would correspond to the greater Brussels region. But with the institutionary reforms of 1989, the greater Brussels area was turned into an official region - not a city -, la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, so all articles in Q9005 should ultimately be merged with the ones in Q240. The concept of Q9005 was discussed and rejected about 3 years ago in WP.NL because it doesn't offer anything else than wat Q240 should already be describing. For correct data about Q239 and Q240, please check WP.NL and not WP.FR as the latter contains numerous mistakes as well. --Midas02 (talk) 01:48, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

in most languages, the articles on games of chance and gambling are the same (the rare exceptions are English, Catalan, Hebrew and Indonesian). In most cases, the literal translation of that article is "game(s) of chance" (jeu de hasard, Glückspiel, Juegos de azar, Hasartmäng, Igra na srečo and so on). Having an item for games of chance is very useful to classify other items but the current situation makes this difficult. One possibility is to merge the article to either en:Gambling or en:Game classification but I'm sure someone has a better idea.
In English, the word "gambling" carries the idea of betting money, while "game of chance" is simply a game based on chance (no money is necessarily involved). But the French article says "le même terme jeux de hasard désigne à la fois des jeux impliquant un processus aléatoire [games of chance] et des jeux d'argent pratiqués par les adultes [gambling etc] ...". It is confusing. I don't know about other languages. This, that and the other (talk) 10:26, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

I noticed that the Japanese Wikipedia has a separate page specific to the Eastern or Later Han Dynasty, located at w:ja:後漢. I wanted to add an interwiki link to the relevant EN WP content, located at w:Han Dynasty#Eastern Han. Note that the English Wikipedia does not have a separate page specific to the Eastern Han -- this content is instead contained as part of the w:Han Dynasty page. There is an w:Eastern Han page, but that's just a redirect to w:Han Dynasty#Eastern Han.

However, attempting to add the relevant link on the Q1147037 page here results in the following error, when attempting to use either Eastern Han or Han Dynasty#Eastern Han:

Site link Han Dynasty already used by item Q7209.

Before the rollout of this Wikidata approach to interwiki links, it was possible to create a link from one independent article to a subsection of an article on another wiki. In cases where one language wiki has an independent page and the other language wiki does not, this approach works to direct readers to the relevant content.

Is this approach impossible now? If so, where do we discuss changing this behavior? -- Eiríkr Útlendi │ Tala við mig 20:12, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

It is impossible to do it in Wikidata and that is unlikely to change. You can still add the link directly in Wikipedia. --Zolo (talk) 20:22, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
This seems to be a very grave shortcoming, given the large number of cases where one article in language A matches multiple articles in language B. What are the technical reasons for this limitation? -- Eiríkr Útlendi │ Tala við mig 21:23, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Wikidata is not only about the interwikis (phase 1) but also about the data (phase 2), which must be associated with one and only one page/topic. --Izno (talk) 22:48, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Well, that is the point, I think. Look for example at glassblower (Q1413824) and glassblowing (Q12185286) – the topic is the same, we could merge, but we want both terms on wikidata. Redirects would be the solution. Littledogboy (talk) 22:57, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
  • An additional case in point is Q2003257 Cirth. This appropriately links to the article about the Cirth runes by Tolkien on most of the indicated wikis, except for German -- which has one article about both the Cirth and the Tengwar scripts (de:w:Tengwar und Certar). Notably, the Wikidata page for Tengwar at Q473725 has no German Wikipedia link (and with the current restrictions, cannot have one), and likewise the German wiki article at de:w:Tengwar und Certar only links to the articles about the Cirth script on other wikis, while the articles on other wikis about the Tengwar script incorrectly do not link to the German article, and actually don't link to any German WP article at all. This is less than optimal, and actually a regression compared to the older manual approach -- compare this revision to the English wiki article on the Tengwar script, or this revision to the Japanese wiki article, or this revision to the Korean wiki article, or this revision to the Czech wiki article, etc. etc, all of which previously did correctly link to de:w:Tengwar und Certar, but which no longer have this link after changing over to rely on Wikidata.
Arrowred.png The real world is messy. Insisting on one-to-one matching with no redirects is not going to be very complete, nor very useful, and it will give users the incorrect impression that other-language wikis do not have corresponding content. -- Eiríkr Útlendi │ Tala við mig 18:19, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Items involved: Q1485229Talk, Q13374616Talk Status: X mark.svg   not resolved

The english page on Panagia / Panhagia does enumerate the different meanings in a nice way; the Panagia entries in other language versions usually concern only one specific meaning (german / italian: type of icon; russian / serbian / finnish: Enkolpion with icon of the Theotokos). Additionally, besides these abstract meanings, the are certain geographical entities named Panagia (see disambiguation pages). Is there a way to reconcile the situation? --Fl.schmitt (talk) 19:33, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
The Italian article starts with the same definition as the English one... Look at Our Lady of the Sign (Q597232), too, and here, ru:Панагиар. Littledogboy (talk) 23:53, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
ru:Панагиар is a "Panagiar", a liturgical vessel. IMHO distinction should be made between
  1. Panagia as epithet for Mary,
  2. the icon type called Panagia displaying Mary (synonym: Our Lady of the Sign (Q597232)),
  3. the different liturgical objects (Panagia as Enkolpion, Panagia as en:Prosphora), and
  4. finally geographical entities named Panagia.
The problem is that the different wikipedias don't differentiate between them - usually they mix some of those meanings in single articles. So, the question seems to me if Wikidata should be more precise than the different Wikipedias, making it hard to connect them, or if Wikidata should mirror any of the structures used in the different Wikipedias (if so, which of them?). --Fl.schmitt (talk) 13:49, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
This is tricky. Generally, where the items are likely to enter into relationships with others, such taxons, ship classes, names of professions... then keep it as logical as possible. If not, I'd advice to keep the imprecise match to serve Wikipedias better. So in this case, perhaps you could ask, are there many articles about different Panagia-type icons, that would be "instance of" Panagia-type icon.
In future it will be possible to add redirects. For now, the old-style interwikis can be added for example to all the Russian pages, linking to the English page. Littledogboy (talk) 11:23, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

en.wp article is about "Communications in India", which is roughly what seems to be the topic of the non-Latin language links, as far as I can tell from a quick look with Google Translate. de.wp article is about "Internet in India", and since "Communications" doesn't necessarily mean "Internet", I don't think this is a match. Are there better matching articles or should de.wp get its own item for itself? What about the asian languages, are they correctly linked to this item? --YMS (talk) 16:25, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Not a perfect match, but what is the point in disconnecting? Littledogboy (talk) 20:59, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, if it's not on the same topic, it should not have the same item, for principal reasons and to avoid conflicting statements. However, being an abstract article this probably won't be too much of a problem for now. This s why I was mainly asking if there is a better match. So if there is an article about Internet in India in any other language than in de, those two should be connected rather than what is connected now. If no one is awre of such an article or can find one, I guess this can be closed, though. --YMS (talk) 08:01, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Kameralismus is a certain policy by the rulers in Germany based on direct influence of the courts to the development of a territory. So the courts would sustain agricultural development after the devastating war 1618-1648 and plant manufactures themselves. It is the German version of Merkantilism, a kind of economic theory as a base to politcs. Kameralwissenschaft means the sciences and teaching of oeconomics, bookkeeping and gouvernment neccessary to maintain the policy of cameralism - somehow the predecessor of todays economic studies, clearly focused on educating people for ruling and development of the territory. However these people also had to learn the Kameralismus economic theory, as todays economic studies contain the learning of the principles of capitalism and markets.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 16:06, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Blackberries are the fruit of the bramble bush. The problem is, in most languages the article for "blackberry" doesn't focus on a specific species of bramble. Instead, they usually cover a whole range of different species lumped together. In some Wikipedias, the ambiguous term Rubus fruticosus is used. Arguably, we should have two items, one for the berry (symbolism, culinary usages, tradition role in medicine, etc.) and one for the plant (botanical information, kinship with other plants, etc.), but I don't know to what extent the present two items follow this division across the different languages. Benedicite (Q2929880)/Grace (Q1668249)[edit]

Items involved: Q2929880Talk, Q1668249Talk Status: X mark.svg   not resolved

This is my first time here, so I do not know if I am posting at the right place.

In French, the articles Grâces (prière) and Bénédicité refer to approximately the same subject, which is Grace=Tischgebet, etc in Q1668249. Both these french articles could link to Q1668249. However the english article Benedicite refers to another prayer completely. What should be done?  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by PierreLac (talk • contribs).

Bonjour Pierre. Well, first item Q2929880 should be split because the two links there, although they share the same name, are not about the same topic. So I'd remove the French link. Then looking at Tischgebet, it seems Grâces would be the proper link as it mentions avant le repas ... ou après, like the other languages. Bénédicité mentions a prayer only held before eating. Grâces has a lien interne to Bénédicité anyway.
A further option to consider, would be to merge Grâces and Bénédicité into the same article, and make one article redirect to the other. I don't know to which extent these topics are considered to be mutually exclusive, or considered to be more or less synonyms of each other. If no other language makes the distinction, it might be the better solution to merge them.
One last note, I noticed there are no Latin links for these topics, which I find strange for prayers that come from Latin. Maybe you could check the Latin Wikipedia if there are no articles out there that could be added to these topics. Cdt, --Midas02 (talk) 16:39, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

If I'm right with this assumption, I don't see a reason why the specific Italian article should be linked to Q19... and the generic one being unconnected to other Wikipedias as the only sitelink of item Q38... Could someone check this who knows either Italian or all this finance stuff better than me? Thanks. --YMS (talk) 11:12, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Most language versions have only one of these articles, the other being a redirect or non-existent. The existing article typically describes both the story and the character. However some languages, notably Italian and Chinese, have distinct articles with non-trivial content.

I think that merging these items on wikidata would make more sense than creating separate pages in most languages. Before proceeding, the editors in language versions that have two articles should be notified and advised to merge the articles in their language. Here is the list of articles to merge (5 languages) as reported by the wikidata merge wizard:

Hi! I am from Vietnamese Wikipedia. informatics (Q4027615) is not correct. It is not "Khoa học máy tính" in Vietnamese. It is called "Thông tin (lĩnh vực giáo dục)" but this page is still not created. Other ones are ok. I changed the title of informatics (Q4027615). Fixed. Alphama (talk) 07:55, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

The labels of informatics (Q4027615) are still the same as those of computer science (Q21198). The labels of informatics (Q4027615) should probably be removed. —Ruud 18:11, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Pålegg/spread (Q1472481)/cold cut (Q10426)[edit]

Items involved: Q1472481Talk, Q10426Talk Status: X mark.svg   not resolved

"Pålegg" is a Scandinavian/Norwegian word for just about anything you put on a slice of bread. "Spread" is soft pålegg. "Cold cut" is meat pålegg. So we have three terms, but only two items? Or maybe a third item already exists? How is pålegg classified in other languages? - Soulkeeper (talk) 17:11, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
In Swedish (closly related to Norwegian), Pålägg is a disambig-item. Smörgåspålägg is (almost) anything you can put on a Sandwich, while Kallskuret is only meat (ham and sausages), prepared to be used on a sandwich or as a part of a smörgåsbord. -- Lavallen (talk) 17:44, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
I see you add a strike to the Scandinavian part, but I would consider it correct. "Pålägg" is the main Swedish term for anything you put on a slice of bread, but since it also could be an economic term, is sv:Pålägg a disambig-page on svwiki. And a Swede would pronounce pålägg and pålegg in the same way. And I would expect anybody from Stockholm, to spell it (incorrectly) with e, since many of them cannot hear the difference between these letters. -- Lavallen (talk) 18:20, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Agricultural science and Agronomy[edit]

Items involved: Q3606845Talk, Q173113Talk Status: Pictogram voting question.svg   partially resolved

In Italian agronomia is a branch of scienze agrarie, called also agraria (See [1] e [2]). In English agronomy is a branch of Agricultural science as well (see: [3] and [4], [5]. I don't expect distinction to be perfect (and I am not giving any one because it would take too much time and space, I let you do your own research on the sources), but it is clear that in some language the first "term" is less generic than the second.

Unfortunately, in other languages the same root close to "agronomy" is probably used for the generic term. For example in French "sciences agraires" is a rare expression and many dictionares translate the italian "agraria"(="scienze agrarie") with "agronomie". I have the feeling that Pflanzenbauwissenschaften and Agrarwissenschaften should be inverted between the two items or at least the last one should be moved to Q3606845.

In conclusion, there is quite a mess. Just take a look in the interwikis in en:agricultural science. I tried to remove the "free" interwikis but I was reverted by a user who didn't reply to my message.

So, can we just try to revise with reliable sources if the interwikis are ok?--Alexmar983 (talk) 22:03, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

In German, agronomy (Agronomie) is an old fashioned term for agricultural science. At least agricultural science is the more generic term. Q3606845 seems to link the wrong German term, it should be Agrarwissenschaften as in Q173113. See also — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 15:24, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

In music there are two terms related to Q298126 (in some languages they are spelled differently): a sequence of chords and the end of a musical composition. Q1069389 should only include the end and Q14088448 should only include the sequence. Q298126 and Cadence (Q2665078) are disambiguations. sh:Solistička kadenca and sr:Солистичка каденца (Q1069389) are "sub-disambiguations" (even not really) dealing only with these two terms. There is a big mess in categories dealing with pigs and related taxa. There should be different intems for categories for suborder Suida, for family Suidae, for genus Sus, for species Sus scrofa, for domestic pigs and for races of pigs. Now all them are messed in a single item, with lots of categories linked by local interwikis. The fact that different wikipedias chosed different meanings for the translation of "category:pigs" (some ones as the genus, some ones just for domestic pigs, and so) doesn't help.--Pere prlpz (talk) 15:08, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

ticket (Q454839)/entrance ticket (Q551800)/ride ticket (Q182587)/airline ticket (Q1140537)/electronic ticket (Q1273299)[edit]

Items involved: Q454839Talk, Q551800Talk, Q182587Talk, Q1140537Talk, Q1273299Talk Status: X mark.svg   not resolved

There occure some inconsistencies in interwikis.
  • ticket (Q454839) links only to dissambiguation pages, a real item covering the full scope of the term "Ticket" is missing
  • entrance ticket (Q551800) - the linked English Wikipedia article - Ticket (admission) - seems to cover entrance tickets together with transport tickets (tickets to ride), however some linked articles covers only entrance tickets (as an opposite of transport tickets). Some languages have a specific term for entrance ticket (de:Eintrittskarte, cs:Vstupenka etc.) which doesn't include transport tickets (ride tickets).
  • ride ticket (Q182587) - the linked English article is "train ticket", some linked articles are about "transport ticket" generally (including bus tickets, tram tickets, ship tickets, amussement ride tickets etc.). Some languages have a specific word for land-transport ticket /ride ticket (de:Fahrkarte, cs:Jízdenka etc.) (train ticket (Q15306266) set aside now --ŠJů (talk) 17:54, 15 December 2013 (UTC))
  • airline ticket (Q1140537) seems to have no problem (however the problem is whether is should be attributed as a type of ride ticket (Q182587) or shouldn't.
  • electronic ticket (Q1273299) in some languages covers airline tickets only, in some languages covers electronic bus, train, ship or even entrance tickets too. mulled wine (Q6584)/Glogg (Q7723658)[edit]

Items involved: Q6584Talk, Q7723658Talk Status: X mark.svg   not resolved

English article "Mulled wine" seems as the same thing as Norwegian "Gløgg". But it is not possible to add the Norwegian language link because of the conflict.
I guess the solution is to have a separate item for the articles who handle only the Nordic version of the drink. The Swedish version sv:Glögg is almost only about the Nordic version (Q7723658), therefor now moved. But I think "Glühwein" is considered to be in the same group of drinks. -- Lavallen (talk) 15:10, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
If you think that the article no:Gløgg is about mulled wine in general (not only the nordic variant), then the link should be moved to mulled wine (Q6584). To me the article looks very much like a mulled wine (Q6584).--Hokanomono (talk) 23:29, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

English label in Q253019 looks similar to many of labels in Q123705 which prevents me from correct russian labelling. I don't know which is ru:Квартал. --Infovarius (talk) 14:40, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
@Infovarius: There is an object for the disambiguation pages Q1437134, one for the subdivisions within cities Q123705, and one for the subdivisiosn of other places (in German: 'Orte, Gemeinden') Q253019. The question what is a 'city' and what not, is not in every country handled equally. However, the English page en:Quarter (urban subdivision) looks for me like the it speacks about a subdivision of cities AND other places, i.e. this would be the union of both indivdual objects. Are there other languages which looks similar to that? Then, one could create a new object linking to the English page. But the Russian page should stay linked to the disambiguation object Q1437134, and ru:Городской_квартал does not yet exists. --Zuphilip (talk) 11:54, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
