Q22652 (green space/park)

Items involved: Q22652Talk, Q22658Talk, Q22698Talk Status: Symbol OK.svg   resolved

There seems to be partial overlap between the following words, with exact meaning probably varying depending on language and place:

Additionally, the word "park" itself (Q22698) can have various, very differnt meaning (US National Parks are convervation areas, with minimal human intervention, and sometimes restricted public entry, but urban parks are nearly the opposite: they are generally meant for public enjoyment, with heavy human intervention. So not sure it makes a coherent entry.

Q4209223/Q44918 (Rechtsstaat/rule of law)

Items involved: Q4209223Talk, Q44918Talk Status: Symbol OK.svg   resolved

It seems to me that Q4209223 is about the Rechtsstaat government model, while Q44918 is about the rule of law principle... if I'm correct, a lot of interwiki links on the latter should be associated with the former, and that should be reflected on the different language Wikipedias, too. Right? Enoirditalk 15:58, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Correct. At least ca:Estat de Dret, fr:État de droit, gl:Estado de dereito, it:Stato di diritto, la:Regnum legis, pt:Estado de direito, ro:Stat de drept should be moved to Q4209223. --Kronf (talk) 05:18, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

some may refer to the island and some others may refer to the country, but I don't know which especially. --Ricordisamoa 23:39, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Looks like the only language with an article for both the island and the country is Russian. I've swapped them over and merged the rest. Delsion23 (talk) 00:17, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
Something is wrong here. On the english wikipedia article for Greenland there are only 14 interwikilinks when there should be more than 140. Make91 (talk) 00:04, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
There's been an attempt to distinguish the articles on the island (Q223) from the country (Q4148644) but EN, DE and perhaps most articles actually capture both. I argue that given that RU distinguishes, that we need at least three entries, one for island, one for country, one for island and country. Very sad. --Joe Decker (talk) 19:41, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
What's sad? :) Country is not equal island, because it is situated on not the single island. Sad that articles about both do not understand it. It ought to propose division of such articles. Infovarius (talk) 17:44, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
In most cases, splitting such an article is impossible. The English Wikipedia policy is that if an administrative unit coincides with a geographical entity, first an article on a geographical entity is created, and the creation of article on the administrative unit is only justified if it has non-trivial info not related to geographical entity.--Ymblanter (talk) 18:36, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Since I had resolved this conflict, people went in and started mixing them up again. I had forgotten to change the descriptions around in the major languages, so people had begun moving the sitelinks from one to the other. I still believe it is best for all the links about Greenland as a country to be in 1 item, and for the one Russian article about the island itself to be in another item. If anything, it would potentially be linked to the English equivalent of "Geography of Greenland". Delsion23 (talk) 11:27, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
Geography of Greenland is a separate item. There was attempt to create en:Greenland (island) and it should be reinforced (you can find material in ru-wiki). I strongly believe that we should not treat administrative region and island equally because the former consists of hundreds of islands (see en:Category:Islands of Greenland. Infovarius (talk) 19:50, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

I just found this discussion when I was searching for what's wrong with greenland interwikilinks. It's not really good that a conflict on such an important item seems not to be solvable. I wanted to do some jobs on items concerning greenland an I think I should not do anything until we have an agreement on this conflict. I for myself agree with Delusion23. In general, greenland should have only 1 item. Anything else will cause confusion again and again. Why should Greenland be handled different to Iceland (Q189)? That island (= group of islands) has only 1 item and everybody is content with it. --Brühl (talk) 15:09, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Actually there are some articles about island Island: Q678377. Think about: Kaffeclubbben is a part of the Greenland but not of the Greenland. Infovarius (talk) 15:32, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Accurately this is the problem. We will have confusion again and agin. --Brühl (talk) 18:14, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

In w:pl:Grenlandia there are now 15 wikilinks, but previously there were 150. Through it a big confusion is done. Greenland (country) and Greenland (island) are basically always in one article. Does an article about the island of Greenland have to exclude minor islands around it? Does the continent of Africa always exclude Madagaskar? -- Lavallen (block) 16:08, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Okay. That's why I wrote "When is somewhere otherwise". I wrote also: "should be distinguish between topics and supply the appropriate interwiki". For example the article in plwiki first of all relates to the country, including also the Greenland island (because Greenland covers an area of the whole Greenland island, no more countries). Other minor islands, who belongs to Greenland, have his own articles and Wikidata-items (for example w:pl:Ammassalik (wyspa), but main article lost a 135 wikilinks. Does these 135 wikilinks relates only to island, but not to country?--Seti6908 (talk) 17:03, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Surely most of these articles deal with the same thing so why should they be split like this? All the articles from Q223 and Q4148644 I looked at showed area as 2,166,086 km2 yet they are split into two items. What is the logic here? I suggest merging all into Q4148644 except w:ru:Гренландия and w:bg:Гренландия. I don't understand the difference between w:pnb:گرین_لینڈ and w:pnb:گرینلینڈ. Make91 (talk) 17:29, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

That is divided into two groups: island and country.
en:Greenland. Read: "is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and later Denmark) for more than a millennium". This article content info about country.
nl:Groenland. This article content info about political object.
uk:Ґренландія. Read: "найбільший острів Землі (його площа становить 2 130 800 км²). Належить Данії і є автономною провінцією цієї країни". About island.
About island.
Мастер теней (talk) 23:02, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
In these four cases, the split of Greenland to the island and to the country is artificial. In any case, it is the exact same article. Among others this follows from infobox.--Seti6908 (talk) 20:31, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Please read the infoboxes of the four articles you linked. You will find that all of them report the area as 2,166,086 km2. Also all of them say the Internet TLD is .gl. Clearly these all belong in the same item. And that item should be Q4148644. There is no point in keeping the articles in two items. Currently most Wikis' readers will wonder why there is no English language article, while English readers will wonder why Greenland is only written in 15 languages... Make91 (talk) 21:29, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
About island and country. I guess you cannot find many articles in Q223 which is not about both. So the current solution is not good. Byrial (talk) 20:10, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Make91, Byrial, and others, do you think it's good that in one article (de, en...) so different objects are described? Country have not only this island, and island has history not exclusively linked with Denmark. Why should they be described in one article? Infovarius (talk) 07:20, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
I don't think it matters whether I or others think it is good to have different objects described in the same article. What matters to me is that most Wikipedias decided to do exactly that, and I would like to find a solution providing most relevant language links to all. Byrial (talk) 08:34, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
Like Byrial said, it doesn't matter what you or I think. This is the way it has been done in Wikipedias for years. There is no reason for us to change that. Don't you think it's completetely ridiculous that most Wikipedias don't have a link to English Wikipedia article of Greenland? And English Wikipedia only has 15 language links instead of 150? The difference between the articles is minimal anyway. Like I said, check the infoboxes. All of them report the area as 2,166,086 km2, which is the area of Greenland (country), I believe. The only articles that belong in Q223 are w:ru:Гренландия and w:bg:Гренландия, I think. Rest belong in Q4148644. I don't understand the difference between w:pnb:گرین_لینڈ and w:pnb:گرینلینڈ. Make91 (talk) 13:11, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
I don't consider it ridiculous. English is not special here. Don't you think it's ridiculous that russian articles describing the objects more precisely have less interwikis per article? May be we should undertake a poll where we ask each language section in which item do they want to be? Infovarius (talk) 18:37, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
This is a disregard for Wikidata and Wikipedia as a whole. One can not ignore the needs of the majority of Wikipedia, because one or two countries have a different point of view. It is selfishness and not counting with others. Very unkind. Wikipedia is an international, not exclusively Russian, Bulgarian and so on. I read mostly Polish Wikipedia, then others, but I know that most of Wikis treats the subject like English, German, Danish, Polish, and many more. This is a very artificial division. Personally, I think all the articles with the name "Greenland" (or Grønland, Kalaallit Nunaat etc.) should have a single common item. If in one language there are two, such as "Greenland" and "Greenland (island)", of course, this latter should have another item. The rest should have a common item. Because there are evident indications that idea is the same.--Seti6908 (talk) 21:37, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
I believe most agree with you Seti6908. Based on this talk page at least. If two articles list the area as exactly the same, it means they are the same article. I believe only w:ru:Гренландия and w:bg:Гренландия (остров) are exclusively about the island. Rest of the articles belong in a single item. I read Finnish and English Wikipedias, so it is rather strange when the two articles about Greenland do not link to each other despite having the same content. Make91 (talk) 22:32, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
Yes. In Q223 there are the articles: w:ru:Гренландия (административная единица) and w:bg:Гренландия. On the other hand in Q4148644 there are w:ru:Гренландия and w:bg:Гренландия (остров). In my opinion it's a very good solution. I hope also for others.--Seti6908 (talk) 23:26, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

This has been solved many times, but still Мастер теней keeps reverting the changes. Again, why on earth would you have articles which state area as 2,166,086 km2 in two different items??? There is no logical argument for that. They should be in the same item apart from languages that have two articles for Greenland. Most in this talk page seem to agree with me. I won't make the changes to the items again, because Мастер теней will just revert them again. What a waste of time. So, what should be done now? Make91 (talk) 22:31, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Мастер теней's assertion from the edit summary is that some wikis like ruwiki (and apparently bgwiki) have the interwiki links in converse. Then why not just swap the interwiki links and everybody be happy? --Puzzlet Chung (talk) 01:22, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

I placed the topic describing the situation at the w:pl:Dyskusja:Grenlandia. I encourage others to follow this example in their own languages.--Seti6908 (talk) 13:00, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

  • Seems pretty clear that these need to be separate items, but the articles still need interwikis to each other. Is there any way to easily add wikitext interwikis to all the affected articles, so they still include all the useful interwikis? --Yair rand (talk) 04:44, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
Greenland (autonomous country) and Greenland (island) should be separate items indeed. The problem is that the placement of the articles in the two items has been completely arbitrary it seems. You will find that Мастер теней has himself decided which article should go in which item just by reading the articles' lead sections. This is an error. Again, if two articles state area as 2,166,086 km2, that means both articles belong in the same item, the country item. Only those articles that state area as 2,130,800 km2 should be placed in the island item. This is the most simple and fair way to distinguish the articles. Using this, only w:ru:Гренландия and w:bg:Гренландия (остров) are exclusively about the island (area 2,130,800 km2), while the rest (151 articles) are about the country (area 2,166,086 km2). This way all 151 articles would link to each other as would all Wikis which have an article about Greenland, because ru and bg also have an article about Greenland (country). When I made that change however, I was reverted by Мастер теней. Make91 (talk) 11:40, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

I think they are now sorted. Q223 is for country, Q13407191 for the island and Q2034298 for geography. Linnea (talk) 07:45, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Could somebody multilingual please look into the interlanguage links listed at en:Verism (an article about a style of Roman art), as I think all the other language articles it links to are exclusively about a nineteenth-century style of music? If none of the articles linked to from en: are relevant, then a new WD item will have to be created, it would appear (since I could add the link without any conflict messages appearing). However, if any of the articles do also discuss Roman art, then please leave them in. It Is Me Here t / c 00:56, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
Actually, all the articles linked from en:Verism seem to have already been added to Verismo (Q215198), and probably rightly so, although Q7921372 could be considered for some. I cannot find any other article in any language about Roman warts'n'all realistic sculpture. Littledogboy (talk) 23:38, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

fire iron (Q892774)/Q1891936

I am new to Wikidata and I am unable to link nl 'Haardstel' to de 'Kaminbesteck' because de 'Kaminbesteck' is incorrectly linked to e.g. en 'Fire iron' and fr 'Tisonnier'. en 'Fire iron' and fr 'Tisonnier' refer to a specific type of tool, while nl 'Haardstel' and de 'Kaminbesteck' refer to the collection of tools for the fireplace. Probably, some other translations need to connected differently as well. ChristopheS

The items both seem related, although I don't understand what's happening with them on the Russian Wikipedia [ruwiki]. Both ruwiki links look very similar. Someone with a knowledge of Russian might be of help. I noticed one of them at WD:RfD and realized that the link was removed but not moved, so I restored the link and marked it as not done. The Anonymouse (talk) 04:50, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
It seems to be correct now. For whatever reason, the Russian Wikipedia has two levels of categories, for the tournament itself and for the tournament by year. The tournament by year is linked to the English one, since the English category only contains tournament by year. The tournament category is not linked to anything, which seems to be correct.--Ymblanter (talk) 10:39, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
