The documentation should be updated. --Succu (talk) 23:10, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. Indeed outdated -.- Léa will put it on the list of potential documentation projects to work on during the hackathon. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:34, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

difference within range constraint

Hi! In Syncletica of Alexandria (Q3394405) returns date of death (P570) the error difference within range constraint. If there are dates with precision 7 or 6, the error should be quieted IMHO. Thank you, Doc Taxon (talk) 11:03, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

@Doc Taxon: Hi! Yeah, precision in that constraint is a bit tricky, and right now I’m afraid we’re just ignoring it :/ What’s happening in this case it that the actual data values stored are +0201-00-00T00:00:00Z for the date of birth and +0400-00-00T00:00:00Z for the date of death, i. e. from the start of the 3rd century until the end of the 4th century, which is more than 150 years. (If both values were at the start of the respective century, there would be no constraint violation.) --Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE) (talk) 11:42, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
Yes I know what the reason of the error is. Thank you for phabricating. Doc Taxon (talk) 12:40, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Add MediaWiki API Query Service to sister projects

MediaWiki API Query Service is nice, but I generally prefer to contributing to sister projects, so I would like to have them enabled on Wikisources, Wikibooks, Wikivoyages, Wikiquotes, Wikinewses, Wikispecies, and probably Wiktionaries. Most of these projects are much smaller than Wikipedias, so there's probably not very much performance hit, and I can stop sending VALUES statements with values from an API query.--Midleading (talk) 13:42, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

I unfortunately don't quite understand what you mean. Can you explain what you are trying to do? Sorry. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:31, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

The formatter URL for the property might need to be changed. There is an ongoing discussion about it at Wikidata:Project chat that you might want to follow. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:30, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
YES but all they do is talk about it, not do it, is not this form the people in-charge ? 50.254.21.213 13:55, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
This is something the editors need to change if necessary. It's not something we need to change in the code. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:34, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

Per Property_talk:P4491#Format, please convert to string datatype.
--- Jura 17:30, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello Jura, I went through the existing discussions regarding the property. It seems to me that this is an external identifier, and I'm wondering why you would like to have it converted to a string? Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 10:33, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Hi Lea, it seems to be a search string at the website rather than the site's unique identifier for a concept.
--- Jura 16:26, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
Converting this to a string datatype won't solve any of the issues with it; but would remove the formatter URL functionality. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:21, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
  • Given that the consensus under which the property was created was external-id, nobody pinged the people involved in that consensus and creators of the proposal and only one person wants the consensus of multiple people to be overturned, the development team shouldn't act on the wishes of a single person. ChristianKl21:48, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
  • @Lydia Pintscher (WMDE), Lea Lacroix (WMDE): how could we address the two points raised in the meantime? i.e. use for formatter url (if that is still an issue), placement in the second section (could be helpful for other properties as well).
    --- Jura 07:46, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
Hello, I'm trying to understand the issue here but I'm not sure what exactly needs to be solved from the Wikidata side.
Why not just remove the formatter URL statement? Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 13:15, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

Quote property rejecting some values and killing newlines.

I am trying to add the following quote in https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q50300816 :

But, the system seems to be refusing this value: https://screenshots.firefox.com/CZLYvLSDFX2FtHxT/www.wikidata.org . If I shorten the quote, it seems to work. Also newlines are being removed (ideally they should be retained.) Can someone help fix these two problems?

(For context, these quotes and others like it provide the basis for the performance of the chaula ritual.) Vishvas vasuki (talk) 05:28, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Yes the data type is "monolingual text" and that intentionally is not allowing newlines because we want to keep the entered values very short. We will look into adding a solution for longer texts but it is not really what Wikidata is made for. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:38, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the consideration. A couple of points: Limiting text length should be done by limiting basic formatting options - when one can limit length directly! Further, there is a good case for wikidata being able to support short to medium sized texts - Wikidata:Property_proposal/behavior_specification. Is there a way I can track this request (ie is there a bug tracker?). Also, in case this functionality is good to be implemented, I can possibly contribute some coding effort (especially if it's in a language I'm familiar with).. Vishvas विश्वासः (talk) 23:29, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

Let us pick the language without having to change script.

In a couple of places, I've had to change my script from devanAgarI to roman just to pick a language. This is quite the chore which breaks the flow. Examples: https://imgur.com/a/FcRoj , and entering monolingual text value. How do we let sanskrit users just use devanagari to pick the language? Vishvas vasuki (talk) 05:39, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Was the problem that you can not enter a language in your script in the first field in that screenshot? (Just making sure I understand the issue clearly.) What were you trying to enter so I can reproduce it? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:35, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
Exactly - you got it! I would have liked to enter संस्कृतम् (saMskRtam). Vishvas विश्वासः (talk) 23:30, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
I just looked into this and, at least on Special:NewItem/Special:NewProperty, this is because the suggester only tries to match against the (latin) language code, but not the full (localized) language name. I opened a ticket about that: T190761. I wasn't able to reproduce the problem for monolingual text values, though: If I set my language to sa, I can enter संस्कृतम् as language and it correctly suggests "संस्कृतम् (sa)". @Vishvas vasuki: Are you aware of any other places where this happens? Cheers, Hoo man (talk) 23:19, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for following up! I'd set my language to English (since that makes it easier to follow English instructions about how to use the wikidata system). I have not encountered this problem elsewhere (but then I have accrued very little experience with wikidata). Vishvas विश्वासः (talk) 02:04, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

3rd party wikis accessing wikidata

Good day, devteam! What is the current state of possible access of 3rd party wikis to wikidata structured data? As far as I understand from reading the development plan, relevant phab task and a transcript from developer summit session:

  • a plan exists
  • a (hacky?) way to do it exists (as presented by Addshore in 2015 at phabricator)
  • a demand and a support exists (it has been discussed at the conference, devs awarding tokens at phab, me asking this question :-))

What are the current challenges or obstacles in moving forward in this task? Not enough people working on it or higher priority tasks? Not a clear consensus on how to make the data stream technically possible? Or something else or a combination of the previous?

I hope I chose the right place for my question. Thank you in advance for replying and making it clear what the current state is and possibly where the community or (3rd party) developers can offer a helping hand to make "instantwikidata" possible.

Cheers, Wesalius (talk) 07:53, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Hey :) Currently the blocker is having someone to work on it. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 10:18, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the response, I understand what is the main obstacle, but would you be kind and shine some light on the status of work - what the missing developer needs to work on exactly so the whole thing moves ahead? Or can you point me at someone who can do the explaining? Thanks Wesalius (talk) 06:43, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
I currently don't have that written down but if you want to work on it I can try to find time to get someone to write it down. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:28, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
Please do. Wesalius (talk) 19:49, 8 March 2018 (UTC)
I started an overview document and will expand it with the team. Can you have a look at the document and tell me which type you are interested in? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 16:20, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
I am interested in the 4th option - external data use in a MediaWiki. Wesalius (talk) 19:33, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

I don't exactly understand what you want. And especially not with this example. This is a logged in user and for logged in users the IP address is hidden. That's private data. Mbch331 (talk) 21:24, 8 March 2018 (UTC)
Which is one of main points why we have registration :) - to hide IP address --Edgars2007 (talk) 09:06, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

Copy pasting an item from the searchbox

Not sure it’s the right place to report this but it’s still wd related.

With the new source editor, when you drag and drop an item result from the searchbox in a wikipage in edition, it’s not the url of the item that is pasted anymore but a wikilink in wikitext. This has weird side effects, for example doing this with the « louis 14 » search in french and copy paste the first result : Louis XIV (Louis 14k ilẹ̀ Fránsì)roi de France et de Navarre de 1643 à 1715. There is a missing space after the (), and it seems «Louis 14k ilẹ̀ Fránsì» comes from the yoruba label ;)

Another problem with the search results and the new editor is that the first one is hidden behind the « publish » button, you have a few pixel to click on it and to guess what it should be. author  TomT0m / talk page 07:41, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Hey @TomT0m:, from what I understand, this is not directly connected to Wikidata, but to the behavior of the wikitext editor. You can let your feedback on this page, it's regularly reviewed. Thanks, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 09:32, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
Yes but not totally I guess, as the way the searchbox displays the result suggestion has an impact of the resulted link, so a good result may need communication between the team. author  TomT0m / talk page 10:13, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
