Drug names[edit]

The whole batch of yours with edits like this one [1] should be reverted. Active substance ≠ pharmaceutical product!! Both concepts should have different items linked with proper statements and names of pharmaceutical products are not valid names for active substances. Wostr (talk) 17:46, 26 October 2020 (UTC) PS Like: lincomycin (Q423428)active ingredient in (P3780)Lincocin (Q47521770) and Lincocin (Q47521770)has active ingredient (P3781)lincomycin (Q423428). Names of pharmaceutical products are valid only for items that describes pharmaceutical products, i.e. instance of (P31)pharmaceutical product (Q28885102). Wostr (talk) 17:52, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Wostr: Thanks for the comment. I reverted the whole batch. I still detect 243 French brand names that were added by other users, is it ok if I delete them too ? I would like to describe pharmaceutical products commercialized in France like this one: LINCOCINE 500 mg, capsule (Q100908567). What do you think is the best way to add the information that "LINCOCINE" is the brand name of this pharmaceutical product ? Thanks. regards. Scossin (talk) 22:25, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, brand names are added in numerous language for most of WD items about active substances. Usually this is a result of a confusion between what is Wikidata and what is Wikipedia. In Wikidata, active substance, chemical form of this substance and pharmaceutical product should be described in different items and linked using proper statements (in Wikipedia these concepts are usually described in one article). However, this is not yet accomplished here — we don't have a proper link between an active substance and a chemical form of this substance (like between free base and its salt, e.g. hydrochloride) and the statements using has active ingredient (P3781) and active ingredient in (P3780) are confusing (values for this statements are sometimes active substances and sometimes chemical form of these substances).
I can't tell you how items about pharmaceutical product (Q28885102) should be modelled here in WD, that's not my field of interest. What I'm trying to do here, is to keep separated data about chemical substances (which is my field of interest) and about pharmaceutical products. I can only point you to Wikidata talk:WikiProject Medicine, where the proper model for pharmaceutical products/brand should be proposed and discussed. Merging[edit]

If the InChI/InChIKey/isomeric SMILES are different in two items, usually you shouldn't merge such items. If one item is described as 'chemical compound' and the other as 'group of stereoisomers' – don't merge such items. Wostr (talk) 21:32, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I had to revert all your merges done today, i.e.
And I see that there may be more done in the past, so I'll review your contributions to find these merges.
It may not be intuitive, but items that differ in InChI, InChIKey and or isomeric SMILES should not be merged, even if some items describe chemical entities that cannot exist in reality. In chemical databases such situations are common, such chemical entities may be called compounds with undefined stereochemistry, in WD we call it group of stereoisomers (as such items describe a set of potential chemical molecules). This is a result of including in chemical databases structures that do not have a defined spatial configuration or that have only partially defined spatial configuration. Such items are sometimes useful, usually are not, however, we can't merge them into other items (like in the examples above), because IDs for them are not valid for other chemical entites. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask me. Wostr (talk) 22:03, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Wostr Thanks for notifying me of these errors. I merged these items because I thought they had the same InChIKey but I've just realized they are not the same. I'm sorry for these mistakes. I will search other merge mistakes that I could have make in the past and revert them. For future merges, I could open a "Merge request" in the discussion section of the item. Scossin' Best. There's no reason to be sorry, this is not a common knowledge, but in the same time reverting these edits was an opportunity to clean up and even find an interesting problem that have to be adressed now. In some cases PubChem CID was the same in both items, because external database assigned wrong ID or there were other errors what could be confusing. I think I checked all your merges and some were correct, some were not (and are now reverted). Writing on discussion page of the item may not be a good option: most items are not on anyone's watchlist. But you can always write on Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Chemistry. Call for participation in a task-based online experiment[edit]

Dear Scossin,

I hope you are doing good,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I work on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender system that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our system based on your previous edits. Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published to a research venue.

The study will start in late January 2022 or early February 2022, and it should take no more than 30 minutes.

If you agree to participate in this study, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSees9WzFXR0Vl3mHLkZCaByeFHRrBy51kBca53euq9nt3XWog/viewform?usp=sf_link I will contact you with the link to start the study.

For more information about the study, please read this post: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Kholoudsaa In case you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me through my mentioned email.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.

Regards
