Notability
[edit]Thank you for contributing to Wikidata. I noticed that you created one or more items that I am concerned do not demonstrate notability under Wikidata’s inclusion criteria. I wanted to raise these concerns while there is still an opportunity to improve the items.
An important reason for Wikidata’s notability criteria is to ensure that items can be maintained by the wider community. When an item is created, responsibility for maintaining it begins to pass from its creator to other editors. For that transfer to succeed, other editors must be able to verify the item, distinguish it from similar entities, and continue improving it. This not a judgement about whether an entity exists or is important, but about whether the item can be collaboratively maintained within Wikidata.
In practical terms, items will usually satisfy the notability criteria if they meet at least one of the following:
- The item has an associated Wikipedia article.
- The item has both strong identifiers and reliable sources of information.
- The item is needed to support another Wikidata item.
I encourage you to improve these items so that they more clearly demonstrate notability before creating any new items. When you create an item, you’re asking the community to help maintain it. Sources and identifiers make that collaboration possible.
Often, when you create an item, you will consult one or more sources about the subject. Those sources are much harder to reconstruct later. Recording them on the item makes them available to editors who will maintain the item in the future. You may also find the essay “How to create an item on Wikidata so that it won’t get deleted” helpful.
If your item creations are associated with an outreach event (such as a Wikidata training session, an editathon, or a contest), you may also wish to let the organizers know that you received feedback about Wikidata’s notability requirements. We are always trying to improve how new contributors are introduced to Wikidata, and this kind of feedback can be valuable to organizers who are updating their training materials and processes.
If the items concern yourself, your organization, or another topic with which you have a close connection, please also review our guidance on self-promotion and our policy on paid editing.
If you have questions about these concerns or would like to discuss how the items might be improved, I would be happy to do so.
