Stop merging categories into article items!

Hello, please stop merging category items into subject (article) items! Edits like this are wrong, Malawi (Q1020) is not a “Wikimedia category”, it is a country. If you want to move a specific sitelink from one item to another, you need to delete the sitelink and add it to the target page (or enable the Move gadget in your preferences to have a handy tool for that). What do you mean by “is done automatically”? Which “system”? You did request to merge Q34362793 into Q1020, did you not? I don’t know if you used Special:MergeItems, the merging gadget in the drop-down More menu, or some other tool, but I doubt some system “automatically” made an edit in your name without you asking for it. (Even though I agree the merging tools should be changed so that it would be impossible to do similar wrong merges.) --Mormegil (talk) 16:12, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

I see. I have reproduced the behavior of the linking tool, which is very unfortunate. Thanks for the explanation… and… please try to avoid the problem if possible, i.e. be especially careful when linking category pages using the tool. The problem occurs when a Wikinews category which already has a Wikidata item is linked with another-language Wikinews category, which is already a sitelink on a topic item. This causes the category item to merge with the topic item which is wrong but the tool does that anyway. I’ll try to report the problem, let’s see if somebody would fix the tool.
