Welcome to Wikidata, Andrea Shan!

Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!

Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:

  • Introduction – An introduction to the project.
  • Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
  • Community portal – The portal for community members.
  • User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
  • Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
  • Project chat – Discussions about the project.
  • Tools – A collection of user-developed tools to allow for easier completion of some tasks.

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

If you have any questions, please ask me on my talk page. If you want to try out editing, you can use the sandbox to try. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and become an active editor for Wikidata.

Best regards! Emw (talk) 23:25, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

Nominating properties for deletion[edit]

Hi Andrea Shan! I just noticed that you nominated 3 properties for deletion. Please remember to read the guidelines which are usually at the very top of such pages. The guidelines state for example, that the creator and proposer of the property should at least be pinged (or informed via their talk page) of the ongoing discussion. --Tobias1984 (talk) 08:41, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

This should be made automatically, both values are known. Andrea Shan (talk) 18:12, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
That would be a good idea, but the volume of requests is low enough to do it by hand. I think we also benefit more, if the people coding bots, can focus on the content of the database instead. --Tobias1984 (talk) 18:31, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
Adding it to the template would help. property_proposer = {{ping|...}}, property_creator = {{ping|...}}. Andrea Shan (talk) 00:38, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
That does seem like a good idea. You should be able to edit the template. --Tobias1984 (talk) 08:25, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Tobias1984 - Done. Andrea Shan (talk) 02:49, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

December 2014[edit]

You have been warned on the project chat that your attitude towards other users is not acceptable. You have chosen to preceed (see e.g. [1], and this is not the only example). I blocked you for three days; if after unblock you continue, the next block will possibly have a longer duration. You should realize that Wikidata is a project with collegial atmosphere, and even if you make a valid point by inappropriate means, you make Wikidata less attractive to users in good standing.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:07, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

I had hoped that it would not come down to this. If you wish to appeal your block, you may add {{unblock|your reason here}} with a valid reason to be unblocked, meaning that you demonstrate that the block is no longer needed to prevent disruption of the project. I think what happened was that you did not assume good faith on the part of Lydia. In general, I've seen confrontational behavior from you at the administrators' noticeboard and project chat and that unfortunately isn't the way to resolve a disagreement with the other side. It works much better if you two understand and respect each others' concerns; picking a fight does nothing towards that. I truly hope you understand where I'm coming from, even if you feel strongly about those disputes. I'm telling you this because it is important for your continued participation in our community.--Jasper Deng (talk) 10:06, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

Gratuitous hostility[edit]

"Take more care with reading next time"? Comments like that are unhelpful, Andrea. I have ignored similarly inflammatory remarks in most of our discussions since you joined Wikidata about two weeks ago. Now it is time to address the fact that your consistent escalation of content discussions into negative personal comments creates a needlessly hostile environment.

You remind me of another editor: Tamawashi. Like Tamawashi, you are technically competent, systematic and focus on generic usage of instance of (P31) and subclass of (P279). You both take approaches to structuring data that I often agree with. But, also like Tamawashi, you have a penchant for gratuitously abrasive language, and an unwillingness to moderate that after repeated warnings.

This situation is unfortunate. If you continue editing after your block has expired, I encourage you to heed Ymblanter's sound advice above. Emw (talk) 12:43, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
