Merging items[edit]

Hallo Andre Engels,

For merging items, you may want to use the merge.js gadget from help page about merging. It has an option "Request deletion for extra items on RfD" to automatically place a request to delete the emptied page. This way of nominating makes it a lot easier for the admins to process the requests.

With regards,
- User:CycnUser:CycnUser:CycnUser:Cycn - (Cycn/talk) 06:48, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Wait, so you have a merge functionality, called merge.js, which requests deletion, but is not good, because there is another merge functionality, also called merge.js, which does request deletion, but at another place. What is this nonsense? If that other way is better, why isn't it provided directly? And why is the method I use called merge.js if it is to be replaced by a method called merge.js???????????????????????? - Andre Engels (talk) 06:58, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Araucaria balansae[edit]

Hi Andre Engels, I noticed you merging Araucaria balansae into another taxon page. This is not a good idea. There are a number of pages that have more than one P225, but these either involve homotypic synonyms (with few iw-links), or higher-order groups where priority does not apply. Otherwise, synonyms can be filled in under "also known as", although this is imprecise. We really should have a property "synonyms of this name" and also "correct name" which would then allow putting in proper taxonomic references, but we don't have these yet. - Brya (talk) 09:57, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

some help tools[edit]

Hi Andre Engels! You may add some help tools to user:Andre Engels/common.js . Please see User:Rotsaert8000 (in Esperanto), Wikidata:Tools, and Wikidata:Tools/User scripts. On the user:i18n-page you will see all WD gadget links. It takes time to see what fits most of your interests. Good luck gangLeri לערי ריינהארט (talk) 20:42, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

RFD is severely backlogged, and you're making RFD more backlogged. Can you stop using WiDar for an hour or so, until our current ~700 RfD backlog is removed? And also, please check RFD page if it is backlogged (and slow down when it's backlogged.) Thanks. by ReviComplaint? at 08:38, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

You have made a lot of merge. Maybe you should request an adminship. That will reduce the current large RfD backlog.--GZWDer (talk) 09:55, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Congratulations, Dear Administrator![edit]

Deutsch | English | español | français | italiano | Nederlands | português | русский | +/−

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our gift is better than the one at Commons or Meta)

You have your gun; now here's your badge: {{User admin}}/{{#babel:admin}} and {{Admin topicon}}. Enjoy!

Andre Engels, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Wikidata. Please take a moment to read the Wikidata:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Wikidata:Project chat, Wikidata:Requests for comment, and Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikidata-admin @ If you need access, you can flag someone down at @ You may find Wikidata:Guide to Adminship to be useful reading. You may also want to consider adding yourself to meta:Template:Wikidata/Ambassadors, and to any similar page on your home wiki if one exists. (Check Wikipedia:Wikidata/Wikidatans (Q14964498).)

Please also add/update the languages you speak to your listing at Wikidata:List of administrators. You may also like to add your username to this list if you would not like that items you delete at RfD get marked as deleted automatically. Again, welcome to the admin corps!

ComicbookDB and Musicbrainz Imports[edit]

I can see that 4 related data entries were removed; Q17275459, Q17275421, Q17275427, Q17275466.

For reasons of; "does not meet the notability policy". However it comes in line with, "It refers to an instance of a clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity. The entity must be notable, in the sense that it can be described using serious and publicly available references."

However all those related articles, about Heaven Sent Gaming, were imported from Musicbrainz, Freebase, and/or ComicBookDB. All of which were to be used in linking that corresponding information. And, for that reason, "it is needed to make statements made in other items more useful."

I apologize for not properly linking to that corresponding information. My apologies, I will correct this if you could repost the content, again my apologies for not making it clear in the data entries. Also, another user Haplology had patrolled the pages.

Best wishes, 16:57, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

P.S. thank you very much for patrolling and maintaining Wikidata, this is a great project. I just want to import some notable webcomic stuff, also obscure, but notable musicians.

P.P.S. I am now doing editing as DunDunDunt (talk) 17:19, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

This is being resolved by User:Jakec, thank you! DunDunDunt (talk) 18:28, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Now, I've made a duplicate entry.[edit]

I accidentally made another Heaven Sent Gaming entry. Since you deleted Q17275459, accidentally created Q17275630.

Could you please undelete those prior four entries? And merge my mistake duplicate entry? bad. I'm a newb. DunDunDunt (talk) 17:34, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

You merged a town with a subdistrict - Mueang Phan (Q13025321) and Mueang Phan (Q6931919) are different. Please pay more attention while merging. Ahoerstemeier (talk) 16:19, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

In general, I agree with that. But what about the similar item. From this reasoning Q17582134 should be merged with Q8552003. --sasha (krassotkin) 06:25, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

And this: Pavetta canescens (Q15484844), not the same species. --Succu (talk) 16:59, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Pardon, but for Pavetta canescens (Q15484844), 3 articles are using same image c:File:Pavetta tomentosa W IMG 2868.jpg, and having same commons category. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:49, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
That remark was not about these 3 articles, but about Pavetta tomentosa (Q6067607) that I had merged with it, but based on that remark have since then self-reverted. - Andre Engels (talk) 06:51, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
Although that image does say Pavetta tomentosa = Pavetta canescens, so probably they are the same? - Andre Engels (talk) 06:53, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
@Liuxinyu970226, Andre Engels: Use taxon synonym (P1420) together with a reference if you think these are synonyms. --Succu (talk) 07:16, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
One subject, one item. Whether that subject has a different name shouldn't matter. - Andre Engels (talk) 08:57, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
Happiness is not an issue, correctness is. --Succu (talk) 09:39, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
Correctness, in my opinion, is putting information about one species on the same page, rather than information about one name. - Andre Engels (talk) 10:29, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
Kew Gardens treats them as two distinct species. What's your reference? --Succu (talk) 10:53, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
No, they don't: - Andre Engels (talk) 11:52, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
zh:绒毛大沙叶 is about Pavetta tomentosa Roxb. ex Sm. ([1]) and not Pavetta tomentosa A.Rich. ([2]). Regards --Succu (talk) 12:23, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Unlock request[edit]

I wanted to add new language version for this Open Source Software page please unlock the Edit function. I wonder why someone locked this?! Orgio89 (talk) 02:34, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Also this page I was going to add new language version but the Edit button is not working now I am wondering whether someone blocked me or blocked whole Mongolian access into Wikidata?! Can you clarify it? For this page I was going to link [| this page], and for this previous sentence page I was going to link [| this page]. These all Mongolian versions of the articles. Orgio89 (talk) 04:52, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
I have no idea what is going on, but I am able to edit the pages, also when I am not logged in. Could you please try again and note whether it works now? And if it doesn't work, exactly what you are seeing or not seeing? Thanks in advance, I do hope this situation is resolved. - Andre Engels (talk) 13:58, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. It worked today but it is very strange yesterday did not work. Thank you. Orgio89 (talk) 03:41, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
Then I guess it was a locked database or some similar temporary software issue at the Wikimedia side. - Andre Engels (talk) 12:09, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Q3432673 and Q18890701[edit]

Hello Andre Engels. You have merged Puberty (Q3432673) and Q18890701 but there are two different version with different collection (P195) , inception (P571), catalog code (P528). New item was created Puberty (Q19698146) to split again. Best regards. Shonagon (talk) 13:28, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

You added the Britannica Online ID, but I see that they don't actually have an article on this topic. The link just goes to a page telling us there is no article. --EncycloPetey (talk) 15:12, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

I have remverted it now, but given the way these things are represented in that game ({%22type%22%3A%22any%22}), it's hard for me to guarantee a similar thing will not happen again. - Andre Engels (talk) 15:40, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

Problem with Mix-n-Match?[edit]

Hi Andre, I noticed you created these two Gideon de Courcelles (Q23832645) and Q23832646 with little info besides the BPN number, which is the same for both. They appear to have been created almost simultaneously. Please check how you created them and if there's a problem with item creation from MnM, maybe tell Magnus. thx Jane023 (talk) 12:41, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Unfortunately, because of the time since this happened, I have no idea what could have gone wrong. Thanks for notifying me though. I might check for this kind of thing in the future, maybe then I will find something. - Andre Engels (talk) 12:46, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Deletion of Q18576964[edit]

I have just encountered this deletion of Samuel Culverwell (Q18576964) by you, from 28 October 2016.

I can't now read the deleted item. The edit summary tells me "insufficient information to identify a unique person - content was: "Brett Usher, ‘Culverwell family (per. c.1545–c.1640)’, first published"). So I believe this item was bot-created as part of the project on the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB). This site is behind a paywall; however, it is a significant source for British history, and is widely available freely in the UK, with a local library card (and I use it all the time this way).

What is anyway available is the index page at

I believe that the deleted page would have carried the OBIN identifier 101070078; which does uniquely identify the person Samuel Culverwell. I am currently checking through all these identifiers, to see which are missing from Wikidata. There should be no reason to delete a page with an OBIN identifier. In any case, I can clarify such issues. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:30, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Ok, I undeleted it now, sorry for the delay. - Andre Engels (talk) 16:33, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Bot descriptions[edit]

Please fix your bot, it is making edits such as Special:Diff/695967821 and Special:Diff/695241724 which don't even come close to following Help:Description and is even overwriting ones which do.

Also you might want to redirect your bot's talk page to your own, that's what most bot operators do. - Nikki (talk) 08:58, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

If anything has to be fixed, it is me. I choose these descriptions from among what the bot creates from sites linked. - Andre Engels (talk) 09:19, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Please avoid creating duplicates[edit]

Hello, I'm Marsupium. Before creating an item, please make sure it doesn't already exist. There had already been Jack Knox (Q21455991) when you created Q54876222. Please be careful. Thank you! GTAA on Wikidata[edit]

You receive this message because you previously matched persons from the GTAA (the Thesaurus for Audiovisual Archives) with items on Wikidata. We would like to inform you about some improvements that we have made to that catalogue on Mix’n’Match. We have improved the automatic links and added additional information from our catalogue (what we’ve called ‘extracted terms’) to the terms. We hope that this makes matching the thesaurus with Wikidata that much more fun and easier. Read more about this project here or in Dutch WikiProject Dutch Media History nl here. Descriptions by Robbot[edit]

Thanks a lot for the thorough items created with help of Robbot! The descriptions though added with this edit I think you should have better left out then adding them. The English one doesn't comply with Help:Description, is uppercase and has a full stop, the German one obviously taken from GND doesn't make much sense at all. Thanks for noting! Cheers, --Marsupium (talk) 12:34, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

Robbot struggles with some characters - "Évora" comes out as "\u00c9vora"[edit]

Hola! It seems your bot might have a problem with encoding special characters/accents, in this example ( "Évora" comes out as "\u00c9vora" in the English description. Can you have a look when you get the time? Moebeus (talk) 01:54, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello. The issue is that bot gets its description from the linked pages, it chooses a part of the page as a possible description, then I decide among the descriptions provided. The given description comes from discogs, the issue being that it gets it from a part of the page that is in json, and apparently non-latin characters are escaped this way in json (or at least Discogs does so). I'll look into ways to unescape this kind of cases (I'm having the same issue, but more commonly, with the National Library of Poland). - Andre Engels (talk) 07:08, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
