Sometimes I deliberately uncheck "Always merge into the older item" to avoid overwriting the descriptions.

In the beginning, I acted from Wikipedia via "Sprachen ⚙ ✐Links hinzufügen" ("Languages ⚙ ✐Add links") or from Commons via "In Wikipedia ✐Add links", but I found that creating new items is safer with QuickStatements, so now I add sitelink + label with QS rather than from WP.
