Regarding the limit of 100,000[edit]

See discussion here: Wikidata:Project_chat#Lets_decide_about_limits_for_sizes_of_human_settlements--So9q (talk) 21:51, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@infovarius: did you read this discussion before undoing my edits?--So9q (talk) 23:42, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose I could find the discussion somewhere in the archives, but whatever the threshold, what's the point of using this item ?
If we want to get a list of "big cities", we can use population (P1082) and other properties. That is a lot more precise and flexible.
Besides, I see no evidence that the 100,000 threshold has ever been used for anything meaningful at the global level. de:Großstadt suggests that it was adopted during an international conference in 1887, but the source it provides does not really confirm that. Apparently, the 100,000 people threshold has also been since at least 2003 but in Germany for statistical -or policymaking ?- purposes, but it is restricted to a German context [1].
Anyway, the main point is: as long as "big city" is only defined in terms of population within administrative limits, it's useless as a instance of (P31) value. --Zolo (talk) 15:25, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Tagishimon: the biggest town has up to million people. --Infovarius (talk) 08:57, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the subclass of big cities[edit]

Making this is subclass of city/town doesn't make lots of sense to me, despite that there are towns with more than 100k. I would argue it is better to make it as subclass of city as the name suggests that this is class of cities only. The name may make other editors thought they have marked the QNode to be a city (e.g., https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q340) but it's actually not. So when people query for list of cities, they won't be able to retrieve all cities. If you want to include big towns as instances of this class, you should better change the name to Big City/Town. --binh-vu (talk) 21:19, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not all languages have different words for city/town. And this item seems more universal than just English term. --Infovarius (talk) 19:40, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
