Citizen of Germany?[edit]
To call Gluck a "citizen of Germany" is anachronistic, since German citizenship in a legal sense did not yet exist during his lifetime (see en:German nationality law). The question of his nationality remains disputed. His German biographers generally say he was German, but others say he was Bohemian (Czech) and/or Austrian, .e.g., Grove Music Online, among other designations. Also see Music Academy.
