Trotti, Count Rene Avogli. Paris, 1/88 rue de Grenelle. Well known art dealer of Italian birth; in touch with many German art agents during the war, particularly Wuester, an old friend. Also did business with Haberstock. Indicted by French Government (Seine Tribunal, Judge Frapier). (English)
Count Rene Avogli Trotti, the Paris dealer, arrived on Monday on the Kais- erin Augusta Victoria with a number of pictures of the early French, Italian and Spanish schools, which include Nat- tier's well-known portrait of Madame de la Port, and examples of Velasquez, El Greco, Cossa and Del Piombo, and with these pictures is installed at the Hotel Plaza. Count Trotti, interviewed by a N. Y. Herald reporter on his ar- rival, expressed himself at much length regarding art conditions in America, paid the usual and expected compli- ments to the American public, and es- pecially to the American art collectors on their passion for collecting old masters, their taste and discrimination, and their dislike of mediocre work ; em- phasized the difficulty of getting im- portant pictures from the country houses of England and castles of the continent, deprecated the statement at- tributed to William M. Chase (which will probably be a surprise to Mr. Chase), that there are 50,000 spurious Corots in America ; said that the value of every picture must be determined in- dividually; expressed sympathy with the Messrs. Diuveen in their recent troubles, (English)
