The President appointed him Language Commissioner in 2004 on the advice of the Government and the Houses of the Oireachtas. He was re-appointed to that position in 2010 but resigned from office in Febraury, 2014 because he was dissatisfied with the lack of progress being made in the promotion of language rights in the Irish-language community and in the Gaeltacht (Béarla)
