In 1966, the New York Herald Tribune folded. Its Paris edition became the International Herald Tribune, published jointly by the Washington Post and the New York Times. The Times pushed the Post out of the arrangement ten years ago, making it inevitable that the Trib, if it survived, would eventually be reconstituted in the image of its sole owner. That announcement came last week: the first edition of the International New York Times will go to press in the fall. The Trib has always had its own Paris-based editorial staff. The Paris office was a lovely place to work, and a great consolation prize for editors and executives who lost out on the big New York jobs. A good deal of what it published was generated out of the Paris office. (The great Art Buchwald started there, in 1949; in 1960, he was still writing his column exclusively for the Trib.) The question now is how much longer any of that will last. Some Times folk suspect that it won’t take long for the Paris operation to be reduced to a token editorial presence and a satellite printing plant. (anglès)
