1561 schickte Tizian an Alfonso II. d´Este, Herzog von Ferrara, das Bildnis einer Person, das er in dem begleitenden Brief als das ihm "teuerste Wesen auf der Welt" bezeichnete (der Brief ist nur in einem Traktat von Francesco Scannelli überliefert). Bei dem Bildnis handelt es sich wahrscheinlich um die "Dame in Weiß". Lange hatte man angenommen, dass Tizian hier seine Tochter Lavinia im Brautkleid dargestellt habe. Diese These ist nicht haltbar. Wahrscheinlich hat Tizian ein Idealbild weiblicher Schönheit geschaffen. Dafür nutzte er ein Modell, das er auch in anderen Gemälden verwendete. Die Tradition, idealisierte weibliche Bildnisse ("belle donne") zu malen, geht in Venedig auf Werke von Giovanni Bellini und Giorgione zurück/ INV Gal.-Nr. 170
