| Notes | US Marine Corps uniform, WW2 belonged to Major DE Wakefield, 2nd Marine Division US Marine Corps Davies Wakefield joined the Marines in 1934. He was posted first to the USS Ranger, the US Navy’s first purpose-built aircraft carrier. In 1936 he transferred to the cruiser USS Quincy. The Second Marine Division was activated on 1 February 1941. Davies was part of an advance brigade sent to Pago Pago in January 1942 with the critical mission of defending Samoa and securing America's south Pacific communication chain to Australia and New Zealand. He was stationed at Tutuila. The remainder of the Division kept training until they saw their first action in Guadalcanal in August 1942, in support of the First Marine Division. In Samoa, Davies volunteered to attend the Second Marine brigade Japanese Language School and after graduation (“576 hours of lecture and study”) was nominated to attend intense platoon leader’s training at Brigade Officers School (still in Samoa). In mid-October 1942 at Guadalcanal, Davies became a platoon leader. Davies Wakefield met his future wife Maidalyn (Maida) while recuperating in Paekakariki from a bout of malaria. Maida and Davies lived in San Francisco before returning to NZ to settle down. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
