Goals

The broad goal is to help establish Wikidata as a useful platform for curating and distributing structured content related to mineralogy, specially mineral species.

  • Define properties for items linked to Mineralogy and the rules of use for these properties (qualifiers, datatypes, ...).
  • Define references policy and especially ranking for references in order to ensure a high quality for mineralogy.
    • Backbone: the latest IMA Master List and its references are the main references on approved minerals (timeline: type material analysis > requested IMA-CNMNC approval > IMA-CNMNC meeting > approved changes > 'CNMNC Newsletter' or equivalent ('American Mineralogist', 'The Canadian Mineralogist', 'Mineralogical Magazine' and 'European Journal of Mineralogy' (journal of the Deutsche Mineralogische Gesellschaft, the Société française de Minéralogie, the Societá Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia and the Sociedad Española de Mineralogía; discontinuing 'Bulletin de Minéralogie' (former 'Bulletin de la Société Française de Minéralogie et de Cristallographie') and 'Fortschritte der Mineralogie' (former 'Fortschritte der Mineralogie, Kristallographie und Petrographie'), Rendiconti della Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia, Boletín de la Sociedad Española de Mineralogía) > IMA Master List). Space groups are from mineralienatlas.de, mainly; otherwise from JSmol's references embedded on mineralienatlas.de. Sequence of CNMNC decisions are from rruff.info/ima/ and IMA Master List, mainly. Mineral groups should be from: Back, Malcolm E. (2018) Fleischer's Glossary of Mineral Species, 12 ed., mainly (exception: fergusonite group (fergusonite series and beta-fergusonite series)).
    • Again, understand the procedure. A type material gets analysed; later, a new mineral gets a application number (for instance 'IMA2020-045'). The traktandum gets decided in an IMA-CNMNC meeting. CNMNC Newsletter 58 (October and November 2020) of the meeting results gets published, followed by the updated IMA-CNMNC Master list (January 2021). CNMNC Newsletter 59 (December 2020 and January 2021) gets published. IMA-CNMNC Master list (March 2021) gets published, and so on. The IMA-CNMNC Master List is an overview of all valid minerals (with type material) and their related scientific articles.
    • Note: mindat.org and handbookofmineralogy.com can not be used as references. Type descriptions, webmineral.com, Handbook of Mineralogy and rruff.info/ima/ can be used, instead. 'Nickel-Strunz 9th edition (updated and deprecated)': 9th edition updated by E. Nickel. 'Nickel-Strunz 10 th edition (publication pending)' by mindat.org: 'Nickel-Strunz 9th edition (updated and deprecated)' updated by mindat.org; if the ID number was not reviewed, the 'Nickel-Strunz 9th edition (updated and deprecated)' is the reference. 'Strunz 8th edition (updated)': 'Strunz 8th edition', updated after 'Nickel-Strunz 9th edition (updated and deprecated)' by unige.ch/athena, for instance.
  • Organize the data implementation between motivated contributors (share of sources,...).
  • Monitor the data implementation through the help of bots (statistics, detection of data without references,...).
  • Link the wikidata community with mineralogy data users on wikipedias and external persons/organizations.
