Class inheritance conflict[edit]

Interwiki conflict
Items involved: Q7397Talk, Q40056Talk, Q188860Talk Status:    resolved

In English/English Wikipedia, computer program (Q40056) is effectively a subclass of software (Q7397) ("A collection of computer programs and related data is referred to as the software."). software library (Q188860) is another subclass of 7397, in my opinion. However, currently Q7397 and Q188860 are subclasses of Q40056, which seems backwards. It may be that some languages don't make the distinction (in which case it should probably be linked to Q7397), some of them are linked to the wrong item, or they take a different approach.  Resolved - As of today, both computer program (Q40056) and software library (Q188860) are subclasses of software (Q7397), which is now a subclass of sequence (Q133250) and instruction (Q925783). -- LaddΩ chat ;) 23:38, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reading this discussion

it appears to me that some degree of restructuration would be desirable. Yet for now, software is at least as much - in general - a written work (Q47461344) as a product (Q2424752) and much much more, IMHO, than an industrial sector (Q8148). This is why I took the liberty to add this qualifier, thus following the majority in the above discussion.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by {} (talk • contribs).

Looking at other written work subclasses (wdGraph) I doubt software should be among them. Most of the statements about written work doesn't relate to software. Also I think it shouldn't be a subclass of creative work (Q17537576) either, because software in general is not about art and creativity, it's about functions, it's a tool in first place, and not something about entertainment. Software is created by writing - yes, but it looses this form to become actually useful. So maybe it should be moved up the tree - to be a subclass of an intellectual work (Q15621286) instead, as data set (Q1172284) already is. So questionable statements about software being a subclass of creative and written work can be merged into one - subclass of intellectual work. Podbrushkin (talk) 14:51, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

software alternatives:[edit]

alternatives could point to other software instances, or it could point to a website which lists alternatives, such as AlternativeTo.net

for example, wikidata is a piece of software (website), and here's a list of alternatives to it https://alternativeto.net/software/wikidata/ --Mapmaker345 (talk) 23:00, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

economic branch ?[edit]

@Infovarius: What’s the logic behind the addition of « instance of economic branch » ? is not software industry (Q880371) actually the economic branch ? (what’s an economic branch anyway ?) author  TomT0m / talk page 19:01, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Zhenqinli: (as creator of the statement): The description of physical tool (Q39546) pretty clearly limits the item to “physical item[s]” which obviously does not apply to software. I suggest replacing the statement, but have no idea with what. Nw520 (talk) 11:58, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! --Nw520 (talk) 17:27, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just had a closer look at equipment (Q10273457): Unfortunately, as a subclass of artificial physical object (Q8205328), it also describes physical things. --Nw520 (talk) 17:30, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We have also artificial object (Q16686448) as one of the most general class. --Infovarius (talk) 17:51, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
