Script "labelLister" : Label, description and alias list

I've writen a script to add a tab next to the read button to see the list of all label, description and tag in different lang to help for maintenance, for example an empty item is maybe not really empty.

Add this code in your common.js :

How to translate the script :

• Firstly You can translate the instruction:
  • See the original documentation in english here User:Jitrixis/labelLister.js/doc
  • Then import to a new page named User:Jitrixis/labelLister.js/doc/"your code language" for example in deutsch User:Jitrixis/labelLister.js/doc/de
  • And now you can translate the documentation.

So What's new on labelLister :

• A reload button, if you're on the label list, it's reloading the list, if you're on the edit menu it's reset input default value.
• An edit button. When you click on it a prompt appear and ask you the language code that you want to edit (casse insensitive). then an edit menu and 2 new buttons (Save / Finish) appear.
• On the edit menu you can change label, description or add and/or remove aliases.
• If you click on "save" button, change are saving (of course), and a summary of change appear to the right of the code language in green to show you when the request is end, BUT :
• And if you click on "finish" button, the edit menu will close (Attention : All change will be lost)
• You can add or remove several aliases if separated by a vertical bar

it's done, but you can change one value per time, that's mean you need to change one value and click on Save, for exemple to change label, description and aliases, you need : change label value then click on save, then change description value, then save, then add and/or remove alias (only add and remove aliases can work a the same time) and then save. --Jitrixis (talk | ) 02:11, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

in my opinion for adding label you can use categories of that page. i.e. en:shiraz is a city if you check it's article's category you can find Cities in Iran - Cities in Fars Province -Iranian provincial capitals that they will useful for labeling and for sorting and collecting useful categories you can define a dictionary that can expanding by users and each category that has a work that is in th e dictionary will be useful.Photograpers (talk) 15:17, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia categories are often messy, so I would rather not rely on it to guess things like "this article is about a city". Using infoboxes sounds like a more promising solution, and would be extremely useful for phase 2, but that will require a lot of work. I do not think portals are directly usable (for instance an article with "portal:New York City" could be either the Empire State Building or the mayor of New York)

Yes Bing or Google translate are not very reliable, and should probably not be used unless we have no other solutions. But for very simple, or well standardized, inputs, we may find other ways to automate translations. Feature Request

Hello, I don't know if that's working with the diffrent languages, but is it possible to add the "label"-, "description"- and "alias"-column from your labelLister-script-table to the already existing table (with "Language", "Code", "Linked article")? So it would be much easier to edit one of these items in an other language.

An Example of what I thought is this:

Bug: do not unescape text in labels/aliases

Example: http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q9987?uselang=de

On the german aliases i added the html entity Ä as additional alias: http://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q9987&diff=454629&oldid=305793

Warning about a bug

Hi everybody, I've noticed a little bug while I'm updating labels from interwiki: in es.wiki there are some article in ns "Anexo:" and this word remain in the label when you update it. I think it's better to avoid it, otherwise users have to remove it manually and likely most of them will forget it in Spanish labels. Can anyone fix that bug? Thanks. Improvements

• बंद करो - बंद करें
• In en version, it's 'send': 'Save', so in Hindi it should be सहेजें.
• "सहेजा गया है" means "saved", I think it should be भेज दिया or simply भेजा.
• फिर से लोड करें - पुनः लोड or use nukta with 'फ'
• रद्द means cancelled or rejected. It should be "सभी हटाएँ"
• "सूची" not "सूचि"
• Where is 'doc': 'Documentation'? It should be प्रलेखन

An summary of my recent changes to this gadgets:

1. Cleaning up whitespace. (There's still more to do with it.)
2. Cleaning up some JavaScript constructs according to https://www.jshint.com recommendations.
3. Cleaning up some translated messages.
4. Refactoring some repetitive code.
5. Updating handling of right-to-left languages using ULS API functions instead of hardcoding it in the translations.

sorting the languages by ISO 15924 alpha-4 code (P506) code

Hi! It might be a good idea

1. to add ISO 15924 alpha-4 code (P506) codes and use this as a sort criteria
2. to add the selected language code as a title of the sunsequent popup window
3. to add anchors and return to an anchor for a language code previously edited; now you return always at the top
4. to use check boxes to be able to set the same / identical aliases for more then one language; I did not find out how this would work now
5. it is not clear how batch mode works, i.e. how to generate one page history entry only; I think I have seen such "updated in 40 languages" statements in edit summaries; please document all advanced features with step by step screen dumps

It seems that some CYRL writing languages do not load all fields properly. Maybe translation is outdated or erroneous.
I managed to get the gadget running activating it in special:preferences. There is some outdated information about copying inclusion lines in Javascript pages all over around. It did not work with vector skin for me. See my attempts at [3].

I have to admit that my first attempts where made using Esperanto as default value in special:preferences. I have seen that not all messages are translated into Esperanto. Would this generate a Javascript error so that no "button" is shown? In such cases you may load the script in English and offer a selection box about available languages its GUI. Thanks in advance! At the moment the bold highlighted line is selected by the user options in the preferences (mw.user.options.get( 'language' )). It could changed to current user interface language (mw.config.get( 'wgUserLanguage' )). I would prefer an other option: A “Home Wiki” option for all gadgets. This might be a good idea. I would not have much benefit from my SUL homewiki's (yiwiktionary) default language or language I selected there (without changing it). I see now the problem described above is mainly a problem of the following Javascript lines at many:special:Mypage/common.js pages;

one scope of any tool is to identify errors

Hi! I found the"Wikimedia disambiguation page" 9 (Q1993003) and used labelLister there. It was strange that it was showing improper descriptions. To get the point you may see that today you get the following using also the User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js Javascript:

b) discrepancies should be highlighted / shown with another color as red

c) o "one button click" should be sufficient to solve the problem

d) all problems / issues should be displayed at the top of the popup window together with a counter; a fix "all button" should allow to fix all problems (here four languages because pt: is affected as well). One may think about check boxes to select a subset to be fixed.

Hi! I experienced that the "input field" used after pressing on "edit" does neither neglect leading trailing WHITESPACE's nor UPPER/lower case writing. Using copy and paste you may run into this issue. Depending on your keyboard setting you will need to deactivate SHIFTLOCK. These are simple normalization Javascript code lines. Feature request

Thanks @Pasleim! I made a test at Wikipedia (Q52) both for the pair rup and roa-rup and for yue and zh-yue. I am not able to see the data at the deepest level (everything i.e. all labels and all descriptions and all statements and all whatever) but it seems that a lot of invalid languages code related entries can be there. Hi! There are more issues with the gom subdomain and its configuration:

1. w:gom:user:I18n does not fetch the content language properly; it shows it as "English"
2. both LabelLister clasical and LabelLister beta need to be carefully tested with these variants of language codes
3. in the items history normal edits will show "gom-deva" label was changed and not "gom"; see history for "Category:Devanagari" (Q7711803)
4. more clasical tests like changing the interface language to "gom" changing labels and looking both at the normal results and at the (two) gadgets results need to be done
   1. newly added / currrently inserted label(s) will not be display; "no label" will be shown
5. aliases might behave the same
6. LabelLister beta rises an error
7. tbc (to be continued)

notes: always make a test at an item containing all the language and WMF codes as "Wikimedia main page" (Q5296)

Not everyone clicks when following an hyperlink

My pet peeve is hyperlinks that are labeled "click here". Why this is bad is described in the W3C guideline Don't use "click here" as link text. I didn't see where in the code the text "Click here to get more information." is defines but I would like to suggest changing it to "Read *more tips and tricks*". I would also like to suggest changing "Just click to edit" to "Select the field you want to edit". Like the W3C guideline states: you can't assume people are clicking, it's needlesly mechenical.

The bottom buttons are also not to my liking. People are used to the bottom right button being the semi default option. In the current interface that would close the window. There already is a close button in the top right corner and the escape-button also works. I think we should do away with the close button at the bottom and move the preview button to the right.

Of course, it would be even more ideal if the OOUI library were to be used for the interface, but this would require a major rewrite of the code. --1Veertje (talk) 21:02, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

Make available for Commons?

If would be nice to make this script available for Commons. The captions box there can be quite annoying. I guess this would require to adapt the namespace worked on and probably extra handling for the M-objects. If this sounds actionable that would be great!
