Title |
Roman La Tene III Nauheim Derivative Brooch |
|||
Description |
English: A complete but slightly corroded and worn cast copper-alloy Late Iron Age or early Roman period one-piece brooch of La Tene III 'Nauheim derivative' type dating to the 1st century AD. The head of the brooch is formed of a complete interior chord and bilateral four-coil spring, which extends into a 37.9mm long pin. From the spring, the body extends in a sub-rectangular in plan form, widening slightly in the direction of the foot, before sharply tapering to a very narrow extension that leads to the catch plate. The catch plate is sub-triangular in plan, and curls inwardly to the right side to hold the pin. The body is flat in section, whilst the pin and spring are both circular in section. The bow of the brooch is decorated with two shallowly incised lines that run vertically parallel to the edge of the body, whilst a 'zig-zag' patten is situated in the centre. It has a light green patina overall, and only minor wear on the bow. This brooch is 46.3mm in length, with the width at the spring 10.3mm and 9mm at the widest point of the bow. The catch plate is 11.2mm in length and 6.5mm in width, and the weight of the brooch is 3.12g. This form can be paralleled by Hattatt (2000: 290, fig. 149, no. 241, with the decoration paralleled by no. 737 and 238). |
